Schmidt was born in Washington, D.C., in 1955 and grew up in Fairfax, Virginia. In 2020, Schmidt, along with former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, founded a new company, The Lincoln Project, to help prepare the U.S. government and companies to protect against Cyber-attacks and disinformation.
