Ernest van den Haag was a Dutch-born American sociologist, social critic, and author. He was John M. Olin's Professor of Jurisprudence and Public Policy at Fordham University. He was best known for his contributions to National Review. Ernest van den Haag was born in 1914 in The Hague to Moses "Max" Melamerson and Flora Haag Melamerson.&nbsp;
He changed his surname in the early 1940s. While Van den Haag was still young, his family moved to Italy. Van den Haag grew up in Italy and began a life in politics following his education. After release, fearing re-imprisonment, Van den Haag drifted between European countries in an attempt to evade Italy and Mussolini. In 1940, he made his way to Portugal and fled to the United States, arriving at Ellis Island, not knowing any English.&nbsp;
Living in New York, Van den Haag worked as a busboy and sold vegetables; eventually, he was able to secure admission to the University of Iowa, where a group of faculty members recognized his intellectual gifts and agreed to pay for his tuition. In 1942, Van den Haag graduated with an M.A. in economics. The same year, Van den Haag met the political philosopher Sidney Hook.&nbsp;
His friendship with Hook forever changed Van den Haag, converting him from being a left-wing activist and communist to the opposite end of the spectrum; Van den Haag was now a conservative. Over the years, Van den Haag took a particular interest in the field of capital punishment and the death penalty. His book Punishing Criminals: Concerning a Very Old and Painful Question (1975) developed his reputation as one of the foremost thinkers and proponents of the death penalty. Swami Vijnanananda (born Hariprasanna Chattopadhyaya; 30 October 1868 – 25 April 1938) was an Indian monk of Ramakrishna order, born in an upper-class family near Dakshineswar, and was a direct disciple of Ramakrishna. He was an engineer and worked as the District Engineer in the erstwhile State of United Provinces, India.&nbsp;
He was a great scholar of Sanskrit with expertise in religio-philosophical works, astronomy, civil engineering etc. He spent considerable time in Allahabad (Prayag) centre of Ramakrishna Math. He became the President of Ramakrishna Mission in 1937. It was under his presidency and direct supervision that the Ramakrishna Temple at Belur Math was constructed and consecrated.
Hariprasanna Chattopadhyaya was born on 30 October 1868, in a respectable family of Belgharia. He had, in all probability, first seen Ramakrishna on 15 September 1879 at Keshab Chandra Sen's spiritual retreat at Belgharia. When studying in the first or second class of a High School, Hariprasanna saw Ramakrishna at Dewan Govinda Mukherji's house. It was on 18 February 1883 that Hariprasanna, then a student of the St. Xavier's College, went to Dakshineswar with his fellow students Sarat, later Saradananda (Sarat Maharaj), and Barada Pal.&nbsp;
Ramakrishna showed great love and kindness towards Hariprasanna, which bound the latter indissolubly to the former. Hariprasanna took Ramakrishna to be his Master. He however saw the Master only a few more times in his life, as he was compelled to live at Bankipore in Bihar. Hariprasanna's guardians were not in favour of his meeting Ramakrishna. He stayed back in Dakshineswar one night upon request from the Master, and later he divulged that on that night Sri Ramakrishna granted him special spiritual favours.&nbsp;
Vijnanananda later recalled: 'As I approached the Master he asked me to stick out my tongue. When I did so, he drew a figure on it with his finger. My whole body began to tremble, and I felt an unspeakable bliss within.' He was rebuked by his mother and elder sister for the transgression and could not go to see Ramakrishna for a long time, who sent Sarat to bring him along. Ramakrishna made him enter into a deep meditation and gave him intimate knowledge on various facets of spiritual lives.
As a student, Hariprasanna was very spirited and would be upset at the sight of any moral turpitude or social injustice. After passing the First Arts examination from Calcutta, Hariprasanna went to Bankipore in Bihar. He graduated from Patna college and went to study Civil Engineering in Pune. During this time Sri Ramakrishna died and Hariprasanna had a vision of Ramakrishna on the night he died. He completed his diploma in civil engineering (Licentiate in Civil Engineering or L.C.E) from Poona College of Science.&nbsp;
He did not appear for his final examination deliberately in order to help a poor but meritorious student to secure a job, as in those days only the first or second ranked students could get a Government job and Hariprasanna's classmates were of the opinion that he was to stand first or second. At that time, Hariprasanna was financially dependent on his elder sister's husband. The next year, he passed the examination successfully and landed with a Government job.

Henri Pirenne was a Belgian historian. A medievalist of Walloon descent, he wrote a multivolume history of Belgium in French and became a prominent public intellectual. Pirenne made a lasting contribution to the study of cities that was a controversial interpretation of the end of Roman civilization and the rebirth of medieval urban culture. He also became prominent in the nonviolent resistance to the Germans who occupied Belgium in World War I.
Henri Pirenne's reputation today rests on three contributions to European history: for what has become known as the Pirenne Thesis, concerning origins of the Middle Ages in reactive state formation and shifts in trade; for a distinctive view of Belgium's medieval history; and for his model of the development of the medieval city.
Pirenne argued that profound social, economic, cultural, and religious movements in the long term resulted from equally profound underlying causes. This attitude influenced Marc Bloch and the outlook of the French Annales School of social history. Though Pirenne had his opponents, notably Alfons Dopsch, who disagreed on essential points, several recent historians of the Middle Ages have taken Pirenne's main theses, however much they are modified, as starting points.

Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was a political and spiritual leader of India who was the primary leader of India's non-violent, non-cooperative independence movement against British colonial rule. He was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, a coastal town in present-day Gujarat, India.
Gandhi was educated in Britain, where he studied law and became a barrister. After returning to India, he struggled to establish a successful law practice but eventually found work with an Indian firm in South Africa. It was during his time in South Africa that Gandhi first began to develop his philosophy of non-violent resistance, which would later become the cornerstone of his political and spiritual beliefs.
In 1915, Gandhi returned to India and quickly became involved in the Indian independence movement. He led nationwide campaigns for various social causes and for achieving Swaraj or self-rule. He became a major leader of the Indian National Congress and was at the forefront of the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Salt Satyagraha. He was arrested many times by the British government for his activities and spent a total of over 7 years in prison.
Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence and civil disobedience was deeply influenced by his Hindu and Jain spiritual beliefs, as well as the teachings of Jesus, Buddha, and other religious figures. He believed that non-violence was the only way to achieve political and social change, and he encouraged his followers to use non-violent means to resist British rule. He also advocated for the abolition of caste discrimination, the upliftment of the untouchables, the promotion of Hindu-Muslim unity, and the end of poverty.
Gandhi's philosophy and tactics of non-violence and civil disobedience had a profound impact on the Indian independence movement and on the world at large. His ideas influenced leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, and his legacy continues to inspire people around the world to this day. He was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by a Hindu nationalist who opposed his policies of non-violence and religious tolerance.
In India, Gandhi is widely considered to be the Father of the Nation, and his birthday, October 2nd, is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday. He is also remembered and celebrated globally as an icon of non-violent resistance and civil rights. His teachings and life philosophy still continue to inspire many people around the world to fight for their rights and freedom peacefully.
In addition to his political activities, Gandhi was also a writer and journalist. He wrote extensively on a wide range of topics, including politics, religion, social issues, and his own personal thoughts and experiences. He wrote several books, including "An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments with Truth" and "Hind Swaraj," which is considered a classic of Indian political thought. He also edited several newspapers, including "Young India" and "Harijan." Through his writing, Gandhi was able to reach a wide audience and spread his message of non-violence, civil disobedience, and social reform.
Gandhi's life and work were not without controversy. While many people admired him and followed his philosophy, others criticized him for being too moderate and for not doing enough to end British rule.
