Bernie Sanders is an American politician and activist who has been a United States Senator from Vermont since 2007. He is the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history and a member of the Democratic Party, with which he caucuses. Sanders ran for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination and received more than 13 million votes in the primaries.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1941, Sanders attended Brooklyn College for one year before transferring to the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. He then moved to Vermont and worked as a carpenter, filmmaker, and writer. Sanders was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont, in 1981 and served for four terms. He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1988 and 1990 before winning the Senate seat in 2006.

In the Senate, Sanders has been a vocal advocate for progressive policies, including increasing the minimum wage, expanding Social Security, and providing universal health care. He was a vocal opponent of the Iraq War and has pushed to end U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and other countries. He has also been a champion of LGBT rights, veterans' rights, and racial justice. He is a strong supporter of environmental protection and has been critical of the political influence of corporations and large banks.

Sanders is known for his grassroots organizing and fundraising efforts. He has raised millions of dollars through small donations from individuals and has been successful in drawing large crowds at rallies and speeches. He has been a leader in the fight for economic justice and a more equitable distribution of wealth.

In 2020, Sanders ran for the Democratic presidential nomination again, and after a strong showing in the primaries, he suspended his campaign and endorsed Joe Biden. He remains an influential voice in the Democratic Party, and he continues to be a powerful advocate for progressive policies.

Sanders has also been active in international politics and has called for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. He has advocated for a two-state solution and has been critical of the government in Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East.

He has also been a vocal critic of President Trump's foreign policy and has called for an end to the "forever wars" in the Middle East. Sanders has also called for an end to U.S. support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. In 2020, he introduced the Stop Arming Human Rights Abusers Act, which would prohibit the U.S. from selling weapons to countries with a record of human rights abuses.
