D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1959 as a National Science Foundation Fellow under the supervision of Peter K. Henrici. His dissertation was titled "Difference Methods for Mixed Boundary Value Problems."
While at Oxford, Strang met his future wife, Jillian Shannon, and they married in 1958. Following his Ph.D. at UCLA, they have lived in Wellesley, Massachusetts, for almost all his 62 years on the MIT faculty. The Strangs have three sons, David, John, and Robert, and describe themselves as a very close-knit family. Strang plans to retire in 2023.

The selection of ten games published in Game Changer by Matthew Sadler and Natasha Regan utilized the most recent games developed to astonish and perplex the world.&nbsp;

Demis Hassabis is the CEO and co-founder of DeepMind. He is a British artificial intelligence researcher, neuroscientist, video game designer, entrepreneur, and five times winner of the Pentamind board games championship. He is the chief executive officer, co-founder of DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs, and a UK Government AI Advisor.
Hassabis was born to a Greek Cypriot father and a Chinese Singaporean mother and grew up in North London. A child prodigy in chess from 4, Hassabis reached the master standard at 13 with an Elo rating of 2300 and captained many of the England junior chess teams. He represented the University of Cambridge in the Oxford-Cambridge varsity chess matches of 1995, 1996, and 1997 winning a half-blue.
Hassabis was briefly home-schooled by his parents, during which time he bought his first computer, a ZX Spectrum 48K funded from chess winnings, and taught himself how to program from books. He was educated at Christ's College, Finchley, a state-funded comprehensive school in East Finchley, North London. He completed his A-level and scholarship-level exams two years early, at 15 and 16, respectively.
Asked by Cambridge University to take a gap year due to his young age, Hassabis began his computer games career at Bullfrog Productions, first-level designing on Syndicate, and then at 17, co-designing and leading programming on the 1994 game Theme Park, with the game's designer Peter Molyneux. Theme Park, a simulation video game, sold over ten million copies and won a Golden Joystick Award, and inspired a whole genre of simulation sandbox games. He earned enough from his gap year to pay his way through university.

Chess has been part of my life since my grandfather taught me the moves at the age of 7. I became an International Master at the age of 14, a Grandmaster at the age of 19 and won the British Championship twice, establishing myself as the England No.3 behind Michael Adams and Nigel Short.&nbsp;
After retiring in 1999, normal life began as I moved to Holland and started work as an IT Consultant. In 2010, I got the urge to start playing chess again, and my very first tournament back - a strong rapid tournament in Wageningen - ended in victory with a 100% score. From that point on, my spare time just hasn't been safe from chess!&nbsp;
Throughout my career I've loved writing about chess. I've reviewed books for New in Chess for many years, recorded a series of chess videos for Chess24.com, and written 8 books, the most recent of which - The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement - appeared in October 2021. My previous book - Game Changer, co-authored with WIM Natasha Regan - won the ECF Book of the Year prize and the FIDE Book of the Year prize.&nbsp;
