The Little Prince
104 pages, 2018
The Little Prince, one of the most published and translated books in the world, is a story about a pilot marooned in the Sahara after his plane crashes. He meets a little man with golden hair who has ‘fallen’ from space by chance.
As the pilot tries to repair his plane, the little man requests him to draw a sheep as well as a box to keep the sheep in, so that it may not harm any flowers nearby. Seeing this, the pilot becomes curious and asks him why he cares so much about a flower when there are hundreds of other things around them.
The little man says that he loves that particular flower because it is unique and has special powers of giving pleasure to others around it—and therein begins a friendship that leads us to re-examine things we take for granted in our everyday life.
This book is written as much for children as for adults, bringing home the message ‘what is essential, is invisible to the eye’.
In The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry reminds us to never lose our sense of childlike wonder. He encourages us to look at the world through the eyes of a child, to see the magic and beauty in everything. This perspective can bring joy and curiosity back into our lives.
The Little Prince explores the importance of forming meaningful relationships. The bond between the Little Prince and the fox teaches us that investing time and emotion in others makes them unique and valuable to us. It's a great reminder to cherish the relationships we have.
Saint-Exupéry warns us about the dangers of becoming too focused on trivial matters. The adults in the book are often preoccupied with things that the Little Prince finds meaningless. This serves as a reminder to keep an open mind and not lose sight of what truly matters.
The Little Prince encourages us to use our imagination. The book is filled with fantastical elements that inspire us to dream and think creatively. It's a great reminder that our imagination is a powerful tool that can help us understand the world in new ways.
The Little Prince's journey across different planets symbolizes the beauty of exploration. It encourages us to step out of our comfort zones, explore new ideas, and learn from different perspectives. So, take a leaf out of the Little Prince's book and start your own journey of exploration!
