James Owen Weatherall is a physicist, philosopher, and mathematician. He holds graduate degrees from Harvard, the Stevens Institute of Technology, and the University of California, Irvine, where he is presently an assistant professor of logic and philosophy of science. He has written for Slate and Scientific American.

He is the Secretary of the Philosophy of Physics Society, and he organizes the, which meets several times a quarter in Irvine. He is the Editor of the book series Cambridge Elements in Philosophy of Physics, published by Cambridge University Press; He is also the Associate Editor of Philosophy of Science, the official journal of the Philosophy of Science Association, and of Foundations of Physics.

Weatherall's newest book is The Misinformation Age: How False Beliefs Spread, co-authored with Cailin O’Connor. It was published in January 2019 by Yale University Press. In it, we use network models to explore how social factors contribute to the persistence and spread of false beliefs, even when there is strong evidence available that those beliefs lead to poor outcomes.
