The diaries for this period were written in German, edited by Richard and Clara Winston, translated by James Stern and edited again. There are extensive notes by both Stuhlmann and the Winston's, a bibliography of all the writings of Thomas Mann during this period, a complete list of his publications from 1930-1948 that includes excerpts from many reviews at the time as well as several hundred pages of introductory material. The four volumes are encased in a custom box lined with blue velvet and gold silk ribbon.
