Dr Robin Baker was born in Wiltshire, England in 1944, and grew up in the small village of Manningford Bruce in the Vale of Pewsey. The tiny 2-room school he attended had fewer than 30 pupils, with all the under 7s taught in one room and all the 7-11 year olds in the other. Between the ages of 11 and 18 he attended the nearby Marlborough Grammar School where coincidentally, 30 years earlier, the author William Golding had also been educated; all later pupils were expected to be very familiar with Golding's classic book Lord of the Flies.
After obtaining a First Class Honours degree in Zoology, then a PhD, at the University of Bristol, Robin Baker lectured in Zoology at the Universities of first Newcastle-upon-Tyne and then Manchester where, in 1981, he became Reader in Zoology in the School of Biological Sciences. In 1996 he left academic life to concentrate on his career in writing and broadcasting.
He has published over one hundred scientific papers and many books. These include the international bestseller Sperm Wars which was based on his own lab's original research on human sexuality and which has so far been translated into 23 languages. His work and ideas on the evolution of human behaviour have been featured in many television programmes around the world.
His first novel Primal - described by many as an adult Lord of the Flies - was published in the UK and USA in 2009. Steven Strogatz is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Applied Mathematics at Cornell University. After graduating summa cum laude in mathematics from Princeton in 1980, Strogatz studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a Marshall Scholar. He did his doctoral work in applied mathematics at Harvard, followed by a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard and Boston University. Strogatz has broad research interests. Early in his career, he worked on a variety of problems in mathematical biology, including the geometry of supercoiled DNA, the dynamics of the human sleep-wake cycle, the topology of three-dimensional chemical waves, and the collective behavior of biological oscillators, such as swarms of synchronously flashing fireflies. In the 1990s, his work focused on nonlinear dynamics and chaos applied to physics, engineering, and biology. Several of these projects dealt with coupled oscillators, such as lasers, superconducting Josephson junctions, and crickets that chirp in unison.&nbsp;
In each case, the research involved close collaborations with experimentalists. He also likes branching out into new areas, often with students taking the lead. Over the years, this has led him to such topics as the role of crowd synchronization in the wobbling of London’s Millennium Bridge on its opening day and the dynamics of structural balance in social systems.&nbsp;
Perhaps his best-known research contribution is his 1998 Nature paper on "small-world" networks, co-authored with his former student Duncan Watts. He is a four-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in the category of General Nonfiction. In 2008, he received the George Polk Career Award for his "indelible mark on American journalism during his near half-century career." Since 1974, McPhee has been the Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University. McPhee has lived in Princeton, New Jersey, for most of his life. He was born in Princeton, the son of the Princeton University athletic department's physician, Dr. Harry McPhee.&nbsp;
He was educated at Princeton High School, then spent a postgraduate year at Deerfield Academy before graduating from Princeton University in 1953 with a senior thesis titled "Skimmer Burns" and spending a year at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge. McPhee was a member of the University Cottage Club while he was a student at Princeton.
While at Princeton, McPhee went to New York once or twice a week to appear as the juvenile panelist on the radio and television quiz program Twenty Questions. One of his roommates at Princeton was 1951 Heisman Trophy winner Dick Kazmaier.

Labor law scholar Richard Michael Fischl spent four years with the Division of Enforcement Litigation at the National Labor Relations Board and a year with the Litigation Unit of the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board before joining the University of Miami faculty in 1983, where he taught for 23 years and was the 2005-2006 recipient of Miami’s Golden Apple Award for outstanding teaching and service.&nbsp;
While with the NLRB, Professor Fischl, a graduate of Harvard Law School, was the principal author of the agency’s successful Supreme Court briefs in NLRB v. Hendricks County REMC and NLRB v. A Law School faculty member since 2006, Professor Fischl’s research interests include union organizing and collective bargaining, the individual contract of employment, legal theory, and legal education. He has offered American work law courses as a visiting professor at Yale and Cardozo Law Schools; has taught comparative labor law at University College London and Eberhard-Karls-Universität in Tübingen, Germany; and has lectured widely on labor law topics. Thomas Berry Brazelton (May 10, 1918 – March 13, 2018) was an American pediatrician, author, and developer of the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS). Brazelton hosted the cable television program What Every Baby Knows and wrote a syndicated newspaper column. He wrote more than two hundred scholarly papers and twenty-four books.&nbsp;
Brazelton was born in Waco, Texas. He graduated in 1940 from Princeton and in 1943 from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, where he accepted a medical internship at Roosevelt Hospital. In 1945, after war service in the U.S. Navy, he completed his medical residency at Boston Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) before undertaking pediatric training at Children's Hospital of Boston.
He entered private practice in 1950 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His interest in child development led to training in child psychiatry at MGH and the James Jackson Putnam Children's Center. He subsequently served as a Fellow with Professor Jerome Bruner at the Center for Cognitive Studies at Harvard University, then combined his interests in primary care pediatrics and child psychiatry. In 1972 established, the Child Development Unit, a pediatric training and research center at Children's Hospital in Boston. From 1988, he was a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics Emeritus at Harvard Medical School.
Brazelton was president of the Society for Research in Child Development (1987–1989) and of the National Center for Clinical Infant Programs (1988–1991). He appeared many times before Congressional committees in support of parental and medical leave bills. He continued to work with the Alliance for Better Child Care for a more comprehensive daycare bill. He was a co-founder of Parent Action and served on the National Commission on Children.
Brazelton is widely known for developing a "child-oriented" approach suggesting to start toilet training not earlier than 24 months of child's age while looking for "readiness signs" for mature toilet behavior. In his work, he shared his opinion that "...there is little innate in the child that leads him to want to be clean and dry; it must be understood as a kind of compliance to external pressure" and that parents should withstand "external pressure" of grandparents to start toilet education around 9 months of age and postpone it until a child is demonstrating sure "readiness signs".&nbsp;
Later Brazelton served as Chairman of Pampers Parenting Institute, funded by P&amp;G Corporation, a global disposable diaper market leader. He also participated in Pampers advertising for Toddler diapers N6. Brazelton appeared several times on The Oprah Winfrey Show and the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Vincent Bramley was born in Aldershot in 1957. He left school at fifteen, but it wasn't until 1978 that, at the prompting of an ex-paratrooper, he joined the Parachute Regiment. His first posting was in West Germany, where he specialised in machine-gun fire. He subsequently served in Canada, Oman, Northern Ireland and the Falklands. He left the army in 1987 and now works as a building consultant, when he isn't writing or conducting research.
