After spending many years working as a principal of an orphanage in Warsaw, he refused sanctuary repeatedly. He stayed with his orphans when the entire institution population was sent from the Ghetto to the Treblinka extermination camp during the Grossaktion Warschau of 1942.

Thomas Berry Brazelton (May 10, 1918 – March 13, 2018) was an American pediatrician, author, and developer of the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS). Brazelton hosted the cable television program What Every Baby Knows and wrote a syndicated newspaper column. He wrote more than two hundred scholarly papers and twenty-four books.&nbsp;
Brazelton was born in Waco, Texas. He graduated in 1940 from Princeton and in 1943 from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, where he accepted a medical internship at Roosevelt Hospital. In 1945, after war service in the U.S. Navy, he completed his medical residency at Boston Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) before undertaking pediatric training at Children's Hospital of Boston.
He entered private practice in 1950 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His interest in child development led to training in child psychiatry at MGH and the James Jackson Putnam Children's Center. He subsequently served as a Fellow with Professor Jerome Bruner at the Center for Cognitive Studies at Harvard University, then combined his interests in primary care pediatrics and child psychiatry. In 1972 established, the Child Development Unit, a pediatric training and research center at Children's Hospital in Boston. From 1988, he was a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics Emeritus at Harvard Medical School.
Brazelton was president of the Society for Research in Child Development (1987–1989) and of the National Center for Clinical Infant Programs (1988–1991). He appeared many times before Congressional committees in support of parental and medical leave bills. He continued to work with the Alliance for Better Child Care for a more comprehensive daycare bill. He was a co-founder of Parent Action and served on the National Commission on Children.
Brazelton is widely known for developing a "child-oriented" approach suggesting to start toilet training not earlier than 24 months of child's age while looking for "readiness signs" for mature toilet behavior. In his work, he shared his opinion that "...there is little innate in the child that leads him to want to be clean and dry; it must be understood as a kind of compliance to external pressure" and that parents should withstand "external pressure" of grandparents to start toilet education around 9 months of age and postpone it until a child is demonstrating sure "readiness signs".&nbsp;
Later Brazelton served as Chairman of Pampers Parenting Institute, funded by P&amp;G Corporation, a global disposable diaper market leader. He also participated in Pampers advertising for Toddler diapers N6. Brazelton appeared several times on The Oprah Winfrey Show and the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Laurence Gonzales is the author of numerous books and has won many awards, including two National Magazine Awards and the Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. He was also awarded the Montaigne Medal from the Eric Hoffer Society in 2018 and won the Eric Hoffer Award in both 2018 and 2019.
In 2015 he received a Journalism Fellowship from the Santa Fe Institute and, in 2016, was given an appointment as a Miller Scholar there. After reading in neuroscience for several years, he wrote the best-selling book Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why and its sequel Surviving Survival: The Art and Science of Resilience, which attempt to answer related questions about how people make bad decisions and what leads some of them to survive and some to perish.
His most recent non-fiction book is Flight 232: A Story of Disaster and Survival, a detailed reconstruction of the crash of a fully-loaded DC-10. Lenore Skenazy is president of Let Grow, a non-profit promoting childhood independence and resilience, and founder of the Free-Range Kids movement. She is also a speaker, blogger, syndicated columnist, author, and reality show host. A mother who lives in the Queens borough of New York City, her controversial decision to let her then-9-year-old son take the New York City Subway home alone became a national story and prompted massive media attention. She was dubbed "America's Worst Mom."&nbsp;
In response, Skenazy founded the book and blog "Free-Range Kids," with the aim of "fighting the belief that our children are in constant danger from creeps, kidnapping, germs, grades, flashers, frustration, failure, baby snatchers, bugs, bullies, men, sleepovers and/or the perils of a non-organic grape." Let Grow, co-founded in 2018 with Daniel Shuchman, Dr. Peter Gray, and Prof. Jonathan Haidt continues the quest to make it "easy, normal, and legal" to give kids back some old-fashioned independence of thought and deed.&nbsp;
Skenazy is Jewish with roots in Çanakkale, Turkey. Skenazy is a 1981 graduate of Yale University. She got her master's degree from Columbia in 1983. Skenazy spent fourteen years as a columnist for the New York Daily News but was fired in December 2006. She moved to The New York Sun and wrote there until it shut down in 2008. Skenazy also wrote and reported for NPR, as well as CNBC, and was featured in the Bravo series Tabloid Wars.
Skenazy's column in The New York Sun, "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone," described her making the controversial decision to let her son take the New York City Subway home alone, which was completed without incident. The piece resulted in a flood of reactions ranging from accusations of child abuse to fond memories of first-time subway trips and childhood freedom.&nbsp;
The story was covered on The Today Show, Fox News, NPR, and MSNBC two days after the column appeared, later becoming worldwide news and being featured on Penn &amp; Teller: Bullshit!, The View, Nightline, Good Morning America, CBS News, NBC Nightly News, Anderson Cooper, Dr. Phil, Nancy Grace, The BBC, the CBC, and ABC in Australia. In 2015, she was profiled in The New Yorker and The New York Times. The popularity of Skenazy's blog led to the creation of the book, Free-Range Kids, published in 2009 by John Wiley &amp; Sons.
On the blog, Skenazy proposed May 22, 2010, as the first "Take Our Children to the Park &amp; Leave Them There Day"—a day for children to learn how to play by themselves without constant supervision. It has been celebrated every year since. Skenazy also became the host of the reality television show World's Worst Mom on Discovery Life. The 13-episode series features Skenazy visiting extremely anxious parents, including the mother of a 10-year-old who still spoon-fed him, the mother of an 8-year-old who bought him a skateboard but only let him "ride" it on the grass, and the mother of a 13-year-old who still took him into the ladies' room.
With humor, kindness, and some firmness, Skenazy separated the parents from their children and had the children do some tasks on their own, such as running an errand, or learning, at age 10, how to ride a bicycle. In the end, 12 of the 13 couples relaxed so much that they became "Free-Range Parents" themselves. Now Skenazy lectures around the world, including speeches at Microsoft, DreamWorks, Audi, The Yale Child Study Center, Boston Children's Hospital, Wellesley, the Sydney Opera House, and schools and conferences.

Thiele Fred Harvey, age 98, passed away on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on October 29, 1923, in Memphis, TX, to parents Thiele Fowler Harvey ad Jessie Lee Searcy. Fred, his seven sisters, and one brother grew up in Abilene and Odessa, Texas. He served in the US Marine Corps in WWII until he was wounded on Iwo Jima.
He went to college at Panhandle A&amp;M and earned his master's degree at West Texas State. In the 1950s, he coached baseball and football at Ysleta High School in El Paso, Texas. In the 1960’s he coached football at Eastwood High School in El Paso. In the 1970s, he coached football at Littleton High School in Littleton, Colorado.&nbsp;&nbsp;
He spent the rest of his career in education with the Department of Defense in South Korea and Turkey. In his retirement, he wrote a book, “Hell Yes I’d Do It All Again,” traveling to book signings, speaking engagements, and presentations to school groups.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thiele and Jessie Harvey, six sisters and his brother, and his daughter Mary Lou Harvey Sauriol. T Fred is survived by his son, Charles R. Harvey “Chuck,” his sister Pattie Maddox, his granddaughters Kerry Gossman, Katie Brown, and Kendra Fortner, and four great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Neal Town Stephenson (born October 31, 1959) is an American writer known for his works of speculative fiction. His novels have been categorized as science fiction, historical fiction, cyberpunk, postcyberpunk, and baroque. Stephenson's work explores mathematics, cryptography, linguistics, philosophy, currency, and the history of science. He also writes non-fiction articles about technology in publications such as Wired. He has written novels with his uncle, George Jewsbury ("J. Frederick George"), under the collective pseudonym Stephen Bury.
Stephenson has worked part-time as an advisor for Blue Origin, a company (founded by Jeff Bezos) developing a spacecraft and a space launch system, and is also a cofounder of Subutai Corporation, whose first offering is the interactive fiction project The Mongoliad. He was Magic Leap's Chief Futurist from 2014 to 2020. Born on October 31, 1959, in Fort Meade, Maryland, Stephenson came from a family of engineers and scientists; his father was a professor of electrical engineering, while his paternal grandfather was a physics professor. His mother worked in a biochemistry laboratory, and her father was a biochemistry professor.&nbsp;
Stephenson's family moved to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, in 1960 and then in 1966 to Ames, Iowa. He graduated from Ames High School in 1977. Stephenson studied at Boston University, first specializing in physics, then switching to geography after he found that it would allow him to spend more time on the university mainframe. He graduated in 1981 with a B.A. in geography and a minor in physics. Since 1984, Stephenson has lived mostly in the Pacific Northwest and currently lives in Seattle with his family.
Stephenson's first novel, The Big U, published in 1984, is a satirical take on life at American Megaversity, a vast, bland, and alienating research university beset by chaotic riots. His next novel, Zodiac (1988), is a thriller following a radical environmentalist in his struggle against corporate polluters. Neither novel attracted much critical attention on first publication but showcased concerns that Stephenson would further develop in his later work.
Stephenson's breakthrough came in 1992 with Snow Crash, a cyberpunk or post-cyberpunk novel fusing memetics, computer viruses, and other high-tech themes with Sumerian mythology, along with a sociological extrapolation of extreme laissez-faire capitalism and collectivism. Mike Godwin would later describe Stephenson at this time as "a slight, unassuming grad-student type whose soft-spoken demeanor gave no obvious indication that he had written the manic apotheosis of cyberpunk science fiction." In 1994, Stephenson joined with his uncle, J. Frederick George, to publish a political thriller, Interface, under the pen name "Stephen Bury"; they followed this in 1996 with The Cobweb.
Stephenson's next solo novel, published in 1995, was The Diamond Age: or A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer. The plot involves a weapon implanted in a character's skull, near-limitless replicators for everything from mattresses to foods, smart paper, and air and blood-sanitizing nanobots. It is set in a world with a neo-Victorian social structure. Cryptonomicon followed this in 1999, a novel including concepts ranging from Alan Turing's research into codebreaking and cryptography during the Second World War to a modern attempt to set up a data haven. In 2013, Cryptonomicon won the Prometheus Hall of Fame Award.
The Baroque Cycle is a series of historical novels set in the 17th and 18th centuries and is, in some respects, a prequel to Cryptonomicon. It was originally published in three volumes of two or three books each – Quicksilver (2003), The Confusion (2004), and The System of the World (2004) – but was subsequently republished as eight separate books: Quicksilver, King of the Vagabonds, Odalisque, Bonanza, Juncto, Solomon's Gold, Currency, and System of the World. (The titles and exact breakdown vary in different markets.) The System of the World won the Prometheus Award in 2005.
Following this, Stephenson wrote Anathem (2008), a long and detailed novel of speculative fiction. It is set in an Earthlike world, deals with metaphysics, and refers heavily to Ancient Greek philosophy. Anathem won the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel in 2009. In May 2010, the Subutai Corporation, of which Stephenson was named chairman, announced the production of an experimental multimedia fiction project called The Mongoliad, which centered upon a narrative written by Stephenson and other speculative fiction authors.
Stephenson's novel REAMDE was released on September 20, 2011. The title is a play on the common filename README. This thriller, set in the present, centers around a group of MMORPG developers caught in the middle of Chinese cyber-criminals, Islamic terrorists, and the Russian mafia. On August 7, 2012, Stephenson released a collection of essays and other previously published fiction entitled Some Remarks: Essays and Other Writing. This collection also includes a new essay and a short story created specifically for this volume.
In late 2013, Stephenson stated that he was working on a multi-volume work of historical novels that would "have a lot to do with scientific and technological themes and how those interact with the characters and civilization during a particular span of history." He expected the first two volumes to be released in mid-to-late 2014. However, at about the same time, he shifted his attention to a science fiction novel, Seveneves, which was completed about a year later and was published in May 2015. On June 8, 2016, plans were announced to adapt Seveneves for the screen.
In May 2016, as part of a video discussion with Bill Gates, Stephenson revealed that he had just submitted the manuscript for a new historical novel—"a time travel book"—co-written with Nicole Galland, one of his Mongoliad coauthors. This was released as The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. on June 13, 2017. In June 2019, his novel Fall, or Dodge in Hell, was published. It is a near-future novel that explores mind uploading into the cloud and contains characters from 2011's Reamde, 1999's Cryptonomicon, and other books. Termination Shock, published in November 2021, is a climate fiction novel about solar geoengineering.

Rick Strassman was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1952. He attended public schools in southern California’s San Fernando Valley and graduated from Ulysses S. Grant High School in Van Nuys in 1969. As an undergraduate, he majored in zoology at Pomona College in Claremont, California, for two years before transferring to Stanford University, where he graduated with departmental honors in biological sciences in 1973.&nbsp;
During summers in college, he worked for Redken Laboratories, developing cosmetics and a line of hair dyes. In addition, he performed laboratory research at Stanford on the development of the chicken embryo’s nervous system. He attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in the Bronx, New York, where he obtained his medical degree with honors in 1977.
Dr. Strassman took his internship and general psychiatry residency at the University of California, Davis, Medical Center in Sacramento and received the Sandoz Award for an outstanding graduating resident in 1981. After graduating, he worked for a year in Fairbanks, Alaska, in community mental health and private psychiatric practice. From 1982-1983, he obtained fellowship training in clinical psychopharmacology research at the University of California, San Diego’s Veteran’s Administration Medical Center.&nbsp;
He then served on the clinical faculty in the department of psychiatry at UC Davis Medical Center before taking a full-time academic position in the department of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque in 1984. At UNM, Dr. Strassman performed clinical research investigating the function of the pineal hormone melatonin, in which his research group documented the first known role of melatonin in humans.&nbsp;
He also began the first new US government-approved clinical research with psychedelic drugs in over twenty years, focusing on DMT and, to a lesser extent, psilocybin. He received grant support from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Drug Abuse, as well as from the Scottish Rite Foundation for Schizophrenia Research. Before leaving the University in 1995, he attained the rank of tenured Associate Professor of Psychiatry and was awarded the UNM General Clinical Research Center’s Research Scientist Award.
In 1984, he received lay ordination in the Western Buddhist Order and co-founded, and for several years administered, a lay Buddhist meditation group associated with the same order. Dr. Strassman underwent a four-year personal psychoanalysis in New Mexico between 1986 and 1990.
From 1996 to 2000, while living in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, Dr. Strassman worked in community mental health centers in Washington State in Bellingham and Port Townsend. For the next four years, he had a solo private practice in Taos, New Mexico. After two years working near the Navajo Nation in Gallup, NM, he returned to northern New Mexico in 2006, where he provided psychiatric services at a mental health center in Espanola. Since mid-2008, he has been writing full-time.
Dr. Strassman’s “DMT: The Spirit Molecule,” an account of his DMT and psilocybin studies, has sold a quarter-million copies as of mid-2021 and has been translated into over a dozen languages, including Mandarin. He co-produced an independent documentary by the same name, which was the most-streamed independent drug documentary on Netflix. John Angus McPhee (born March 8, 1931) is an American writer. He is considered one of the pioneers of creative nonfiction. He is a four-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in the category of General Nonfiction. He won that award on the fourth occasion in 1999 for Annals of the Former World (a collection of five books, including two of his previous Pulitzer finalists).&nbsp;
In 2008, he received the George Polk Career Award for his "indelible mark on American journalism during his near half-century career." Since 1974, McPhee has been the Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University. McPhee has lived in Princeton, New Jersey, for most of his life. He was born in Princeton, the son of the Princeton University athletic department's physician, Dr. Harry McPhee.&nbsp;
He was educated at Princeton High School, then spent a postgraduate year at Deerfield Academy before graduating from Princeton University in 1953 with a senior thesis titled "Skimmer Burns" and spending a year at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge. McPhee was a member of the University Cottage Club while he was a student at Princeton.
While at Princeton, McPhee went to New York once or twice a week to appear as the juvenile panelist on the radio and television quiz program Twenty Questions. One of his roommates at Princeton was 1951 Heisman Trophy winner Dick Kazmaier.

Vincent Bramley was born in Aldershot in 1957. He left school at fifteen, but it wasn't until 1978 that, at the prompting of an ex-paratrooper, he joined the Parachute Regiment. His first posting was in West Germany, where he specialised in machine-gun fire. He subsequently served in Canada, Oman, Northern Ireland and the Falklands. He left the army in 1987 and now works as a building consultant, when he isn't writing or conducting research.
