After graduating from art college in 1987 Tony spent 12-years living and working in London, first for a multidisciplinary design consultancy, then as the senior art editor for illustrated book publisher Conran Octopus.

In 1999 he decided to leave London and, after periods as design manager for The Ivy Press and Ilex Press in Lewes, and as art director for Brighton based visual arts publisher RotoVision, Tony now work as a freelance graphic designer and writer. 

He has authored and co-authored a number of books, including:

Graphic Design for Non-designers; Thou Shall Not Use Comic Sans: A Designer's Almanac of Dos and Don'ts; Draw Your Own Fonts: 30 Alphabets to Scribble, Sketch and Make Your Own; Greetings from Retro Design: Vintage Graphics Decade by Decade; Type Teams: Perfect Typeface Combinations and Why They Work; The Evolution of Type: A Graphic Guide to 100 Landmark Typefaces; Let’s Talk Type: An Essential Lexicon of Type Terms.

Tony lives in East Sussex where his ever present lurcher is always on-hand to provide feedback when he can’t decide which typefaces to choose.
