Peter Lynch is an American investor, mutual fund manager, and philanthropist. As the manager of the Magellan Fund at Fidelity Investments between 1977 and 1990, Lynch averaged a 29.2% annual return, consistently more than double the S&P 500 stock market index and making it the best-performing mutual fund in the world. During his 13-year tenure, assets under management increased from US$18 million to $14 billion.
A proponent of value investing, Lynch wrote and co-authored a number of books and papers on investing strategies, including One Up on Wall Street, published by Simon & Schuster in 1989, which sold over one million copies. He coined a number of well-known mantras of modern individual investing, such as "invest in what you know" and "ten baggers." Lynch has been described as a "legend" by the financial media for his performance record.
Peter Lynch was born in Newton, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1944. In 1951, when Lynch was seven, his father was diagnosed with cancer. He died three years later, and Lynch's mother had to work to support the family. Lynch reports that from his early teens, he worked as a caddie to help support the family. During Lynch's time as a sophomore at Boston College, he used his savings to buy 100 shares of Flying Tiger Airlines at $8 per share.
The stock would later rise to $80 per share, profits from which helped pay for his education. In 1965, Lynch graduated from Boston College (BC), where he studied history, psychology, and philosophy. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. In 1966, Lynch was hired as an intern with Fidelity Investments partly because he had been caddying for Fidelity's president, D. George Sullivan, (among others) at Brae Burn Country Club in Newton, Massachusetts.
He initially covered the paper, chemical, and publishing industries, and when he returned after a two-year Army stint, he was hired permanently in 1969. This time Lynch was charged with following the textiles, metals, mining, and chemicals industries, eventually becoming Fidelity's director of research from 1974 to 1977. In 1977, Lynch was named head of the then-obscure Magellan Fund which had $18 million in assets.
By the time Lynch resigned as a fund manager in 1990, the fund had grown to more than $14 billion in assets with more than 1,000 individual stock positions. Taking over when Magellan was a small fund, Lynch had no restrictions on what assets he could buy (other than laws, such as an SEC-enforced federal law that prohibits investment company funds that are registered as "diversified" from holding more than 5% of total portfolio assets in a single company at the time of purchase ).
He focused on individual companies rather than any overarching strategy, starting with large US companies and gradually emphasizing smaller and international stocks. From 1977 until 1990, the Magellan fund averaged a 29.2% annual return and, as of 2003, had the best 20-year return of any mutual fund ever. Lynch found successes in a broad range of stocks from different industries; according to Beating the Street, his most profitable picks were Fannie Mae, Ford, Philip Morris, MCI, Volvo, General Electric, General Public Utilities, Student Loan Marketing, Kemper, and Lowe's.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb is a Lebanese-American essayist, scholar, statistician, and former trader and risk analyst whose work focuses on problems of randomness, probability, and uncertainty. He is the author of several books, including "The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable," which was published in 2007 and became a bestseller.
Taleb is a former trader and risk analyst and has worked as a professor of risk engineering at New York University's Tandon School of Engineering. He has a background in mathematics, statistics, and computer science and has published numerous papers in academic journals on topics related to randomness and uncertainty.
Taleb's main area of research is the study of "black swans," which he defines as rare events that have a large impact and are typically not predictable. He argues that traditional risk assessment methods, such as using historical data to predict future events, are inadequate because they fail to consider the possibility of black swan events.
Taleb is also known for his criticism of the concept of "normalcy" in statistics and his skepticism of the use of mathematical models in finance and economics. He has argued that the assumptions made in these models are often unrealistic and can lead to dangerous oversimplifications.
In addition to his work in academia, Taleb is also a public intellectual and has written several books for a general audience. His books have been widely discussed and debated in the media and have been translated into multiple languages.
Taleb is a strong advocate for antifragility, a concept he has developed and popularized in his books. Antifragility is the property of a system or entity that improves when subjected to volatility, shocks, stressors, or disorder and doesn't just remain indifferent to them.
Taleb's writing style is often characterized as provocative and contrarian, and he is known for his strong opinions on a wide range of topics. His work has been influential in the fields of economics, finance, and risk management and has also been discussed in the broader cultural and intellectual conversation.

This volume provides the definitive treatment of fortune's formula, or the Kelly capital growth criterion, as it is often called. The strategy is to maximize the long-run wealth of the investor by maximizing the period-by-period expected utility of wealth with a logarithmic utility function.
Mathematical theorems show that only the log utility function maximizes asymptotic long-run wealth and minimizes the expected time to arbitrary large goals. In general, the strategy is risky in the short term but as the number of bets increases, the Kelly bettor's wealth tends to be much larger than those with essentially different strategies.
So, usually, the Kelly bettor will have much more wealth than these other bettors, but the Kelly strategy can lead to considerable losses a small percentage of the time. There are ways to reduce this risk at the cost of lower expected final wealth, using fractional Kelly strategies that blend the Kelly suggested wager with cash.

In The Kelly Capital Growth Investment Criterion, Leonard C. MacLean introduces the Kelly Criterion, a formula used by gamblers and investors to determine what proportion of their wealth should be put into high-risk ventures. It's a fascinating concept that can help you make smarter investment decisions.

Understanding the Kelly Criterion

The book explores the relationship between risk and reward. It shows that the Kelly Criterion can help you balance these two factors to maximize your returns. If you're interested in investing, you'll find this concept incredibly useful.

Risk and Reward

MacLean emphasizes the importance of focusing on long-term growth rather than short-term gains. He argues that the Kelly Criterion can help you achieve this by ensuring that you don't risk too much on a single investment. This is a valuable lesson for anyone looking to build a sustainable investment portfolio.

The Importance of Long-Term Growth

The Kelly Capital Growth Investment Criterion isn't just theoretical. MacLean provides practical examples of how the Kelly Criterion can be applied in real-world situations. This makes the book a great resource for anyone looking to apply these principles to their own investments.

Practical Applications of the Kelly Criterion

While the Kelly Criterion can be a powerful tool, MacLean also discusses its limitations. He points out that it assumes that you have perfect knowledge of the probabilities involved, which is rarely the case in real life. This is an important caveat to keep in mind when using the Kelly Criterion.
