Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England. His parents' house was in north London, but during the second world, war Oxford has considered a safer place to have babies. When he was eight, his family moved to St Albans, a town about 20 miles north of London. At eleven, Stephen went to St Alban's School and then on to University College, Oxford, his father's old college.
Stephen wanted to do Mathematics, although his father would have preferred medicine. Mathematics was not available at University College, so he did Physics instead. After three years and not very much work, he was awarded a first-class honors degree in Natural Science. Stephen then went on to Cambridge to do research in Cosmology, there being no one working in that area in Oxford at the time.
His supervisor was Denis Sciama, although he had hoped to get Fred Hoyle, who was working in Cambridge. After gaining his Ph.D., he became first a Research Fellow and later on a Professorial Fellow at Gonville and Caius College. After leaving the Institute of Astronomy in 1973, Stephen came to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and, since 1979, has held the post of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics.
The chair was founded in 1663 with money left in the will of the Reverend Henry Lucas, who had been the Member of Parliament for the University. It was first held by Isaac Barrow and then in 1669 by Isaac Newton. Stephen Hawking worked on the basic laws which govern the universe. With Roger Penrose, he showed that Einstein's General Theory of Relativity implied space and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes.
These results indicated it was necessary to unify General Relativity with Quantum Theory, the other great Scientific development of the first half of the 20th Century. One consequence of such a unification that he discovered was that black holes should not be completely black but should emit radiation and eventually evaporate and disappear. Another conjecture is that the universe has no edge or boundary in imaginary time.
This would imply that the way the universe began was completely determined by the laws of science. His many publications include The Large Scale Structure of Spacetime with G.F.R. Ellis, General Relativity: An Einstein Centenary Survey with W. Israel, and 300 Years of Gravity, with W. Israel. Stephen Hawking has three popular books published; his best seller A Brief History of Time, Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays, and most recently in 2001, The Universe in a Nutshell.
Professor Hawking received twelve honorary degrees, was awarded the CBE in 1982, and was made a Companion of Honour in 1989. He was the recipient of many awards, medals, and prizes and is a Fellow of The Royal Society and a Member of the US National Academy of Sciences.

Richard Lee Rhodes is an American journalist, historian, and author of both fiction and non-fiction (which he prefers to call "verity"), including the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Making of the Atomic Bomb (1986) and, most recently, Arsenals of Folly: The Making of the Nuclear Arms Race (2007). He has been awarded grants from the Ford Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, among others.
He is an affiliate of the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University. He also frequently lectures and talks on various subjects to various audiences, including testifying before the U.S. Senate on nuclear energy.
Richard Rhodes was born in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1937. Following his mother's suicide on July 25, 1938, Rhodes and his older brother Stanley have raised in the Kansas City, Missouri, area by his father, a railroad boilermaker with a third-grade education. When Rhodes was ten, their father remarried. The new wife starved, exploited, and abused the children. One day Stanley walked into a police station and reported their living conditions.
The brothers were removed from their father's custody and sent to the Andrew Drumm Institute, an institution for boys founded in 1928 in Independence, Missouri. The brothers' admission was an anomaly as the institution was designed for orphaned or indigent boys, and they fit neither category. The Drumm Institute is still in operation today and now accepts both boys and girls. Rhodes became a member of the board of trustees in 1991. Rhodes wrote about his childhood in A Hole in the World.
Richard and Stanley lived at Drumm for the remainder of their adolescence. Both graduated from high school. Rhodes was admitted to Yale University with a full scholarship and graduated with honors in 1959, a member of the Manuscript Society.
Rhodes has published 23 books and numerous articles for national magazines and wrote a play based on the historic 1986 meeting between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. His best-known work, The Making of the Atomic Bomb, was published in 1986 and earned him the Pulitzer Prize and numerous other awards. Many of his personal documents and research materials are part of the Kansas Collection at the Spencer Research Library, University of Kansas.
Rhodes is the father of two children and is a grandfather. He and his second wife, Ginger Rhodes, have made their home in California.

Walter Gratzer (1932–2021) arrived in England as a child refugee from Nazism, without speaking English, and became one of the most successful and influential science writers. His principal career was in molecular biophysics at King’s College London, researching the structure of nucleic acids and proteins.
Walter B. Gratzer (1932–2021) was born in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland), in a Jewish family of a German father, Hans Grätzer, and a Hungarian mother, Margit Perlstein. The family lived in a small town in the region of Katowice, Poland. Fleeing the Nazis, they first moved to Czechoslovakia, and in 1939, to England. Most of Gratzer’s extended family were murdered in the Holocaust.
Scholarships helped him to study at Oxford University. He started in chemistry when the future (1956) Nobel laureate Cyril Hinshelwood was the professor there. Gratzer learned spectroscopy from Richard Barrow and worked on the analysis of the emission spectrum of carbon monoxide. After two years of national service, in 1957, he started work at the National Institute of Medical Research in North London.
He researched hemoglobin and obtained his Ph.D. in 1960. He then spent a postdoctoral stint at Harvard University. Paul Doty was his mentor, and Gratzer worked on protein structure and stability. He built a rudimentary circular dichroism device for the study of helices and coils. His friendship with James D. Watson dated from their meeting at Harvard in the early 1960s. Later, he helped Watson to produce his book, A Passion for DNA.
Upon his return to the U.K., Gratzer joined King’s College, University of London, in 1963 and was a member of its biophysics section. First, he was an associate of the College and later of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Biophysics Unit. Eventually, he became a Professor at King’s College and a member of the MRC Muscle and Cell Motility Unit.

Neil Richard Gaiman was born on November 10, 1960, in Portchester, England. He originated from a family of Eastern European Jewish descent. His father, David Bernard Gaiman, worked at their family chain of stores, while his mother, Sheila Gaiman, was a pharmacist. In 1965 the family moved to East Grinstead, West Sussex, where Neil grew up with a profound love for reading, beginning as early as age 4.
Some of his favorite childhood books include J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Batman, and other comics. Gaiman received early education at various church schools, including Fonthill School in East Grinstead, Ardingly College, and Whitgift School in Croydon.
When Gaiman began to outgrow comic books in his teenage years, he realized the lack of comic books for an older mature audience. He, therefore, decided to fill the gap himself. Although he wanted to write comic books, Gaiman had little idea how to go about it. Following his graduation from high school in 1977, Gaiman became a journalist writing articles for a number of renowned publications such as the Sunday Times, the Observer, Knave, and Time Out.
In March 1985, Gaiman married McGrath after the birth of their son Michael in 1983. The couple had two more children, Holly and Madeleine. In 1984, Gaiman wrote his first book, a biography of the band Duran Duran. He continued writing articles and interviews in magazines under pseudonyms. However, in 1987, Gaiman waved goodbye to journalism, stating, “British newspapers can make up anything they want and publish it as fact.”
Also, in the late 1980s, Gaiman published Don’t Panic: The Official Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Companion. Gaiman started writing comic books, continuing the series of Marvelman after its original creator and Gaiman’s friend Alan Moore abandoned it. After his impressive work on Marvelman, Gaiman was offered to write the limited series of Black Orchard and also to re-write an old character, The Sandman. From December 1988 to March 1966, Gaiman produced work on The Sandman, which was later collected in 12 volumes.
More significant comic works by Neil Gaiman include The Books of Magic (1989), Lady Justice, and Mr. Hero. The Newmatic Man, Teknophage, Tales of the White Wolf, Whatever happened to the Caper Crusader, as well as contributions to Wednesday Comics.

From Neolithic times through the earliest civilizations of the ancient Near East, in savannahs, river valleys, and the terraces created by the Incas in the Andean mountains, an increasing range of agricultural techniques developed in response to very different conditions.
These developments are recounted in this book, which details how plants, animals, soil, climate, and society have interacted throughout human history.
