Silvan(Sam) Schweber was born in Strasbourg, France in 1928. He came to the United States in July 1942. He attended the City College of NY and graduated as a chemistry and physics major in 1947. He thereafter obtained an MS in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1949 and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1952, working with Professor Arthur Wightman. From 1952 to 1954, he was an NSF post-doctoral fellow at Cornell University. In 1955 he accepted a faculty appointment at Brandeis University.
He was the author of Hans Bethe and Fred de Hoffman of Volume I of Mesons and Fields (1955) and of an Introduction to Relativistic Quantum Field Theory (1961). In the mid-1970s, his research interests shifted to the history of science. He wrote extensively on Charles Darwin and 19th-century evolutionary theories and, since the mid-1980s, on the history of physics during the 20th century. He was the author of "QED and the Men Who Made It," "Bethe and Oppenheimer and the Moral Responsibility of Scientists," and "Einstein and Oppenheimer: The Meaning of Genius."&nbsp;
He also wrote Volume 1 of "Faith in Reason, a biography of Hans Bethe." He helped establish the Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology at MIT in 1988 and was its first director. In 2005 he retired from Brandeis University as the Koret Professor of the History of Ideas and Professor of Physics, emeritus. Since 1981 he has been a Faculty Associate in the Department of the History of Science at Harvard. He was a fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Silvan

Neil Richard Gaiman was born on November 10, 1960, in Portchester, England. He originated from a family of Eastern European Jewish descent. His father, David Bernard Gaiman, worked at their family chain of stores, while his mother, Sheila Gaiman, was a pharmacist. In 1965 the family moved to East Grinstead, West Sussex, where Neil grew up with a profound love for reading, beginning as early as age 4.&nbsp;
Some of his favorite childhood books include J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Batman, and other comics. When Gaiman began to outgrow comic books in his teenage years, he realized the lack of comic books for an older mature audience. He, therefore, decided to fill the gap himself. Although he wanted to write comic books, Gaiman had little idea how to go about it. Following his graduation from high school in 1977, Gaiman became a journalist writing articles for a number of renowned publications such as the Sunday Times, the Observer, Knave, and Time Out.&nbsp;
In March 1985, Gaiman married McGrath after the birth of their son Michael in 1983. The couple had two more children, Holly and Madeleine. In 1984, Gaiman wrote his first book, a biography of the band Duran Duran. He continued writing articles and interviews in magazines under pseudonyms. However, in 1987, Gaiman waved goodbye to journalism, stating, “British newspapers can make up anything they want and publish it as fact.”&nbsp;

Leo Janos (1933–2008) was an American speechwriter and ghostwriter who was known for writing speeches for President Lyndon Johnson. He authored and co-authored notable books, including Skunk Works, Yeager: An Autobiography, and Crime of Passion. In January 2008, he died at the age of 74 due to cancer.
In 1965, he became an editor of Ameryka magazine. In 1966, he was selected by President Johnson as his speechwriter, a post he worked on till 1968. His book, Skunk Works, has been reviewed by Kirkus Reviews.

Ben R. Rich (born June 18, 1925, Manila, Phil.—died Jan. 5, 1995, Los Angeles, Calif., U.S.), U.S. engineer who conducted top secret research on advanced military aircraft while working at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (now Lockheed Martin Corporation) under an alias, which he was required to adopt for security reasons. Rich, known as Ben Dover, helped develop more than 25 airplanes, notably the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter-bomber, designed to elude detection on enemy radar screens; the SR-71 Blackbird, a reconnaissance craft that cruised at three times the speed of sound; and the U-2, the spy plane that flew missions over the Soviet Union from 1956 to 1960.
After earning a B.S. (1949) from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.S. (1950) from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Rich joined Lockheed. They were soon sent to its Advanced Development Projects (ADP) division, Burbank, Calif., under aircraft designer Kelly Johnson. ADP was known as the “Skunk Works,” both because of its location near a malodorous plastics factory and because it had been founded during World War II as a secret installation, much like a moonshine still of similar name operated by a character in the famous Li’l Abner comic strip.&nbsp;
In his 1994 autobiography, Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years at Lockheed, Rich recounted that the technology for his crowning achievement, the F-117, virtually “fell into my lap” after a Soviet scientist openly published (1975) an idea that led to the technology for the stealth fighter-bomber.
Rich, who retired in 1991 as head of the ADP, was a recipient in 1994 of the Distinguished Service Medal, the highest U.S. military honor for a civilian. In his memory, the Ben Rich Lockheed Martin Chair of Advanced Aerospace Technologies was established at UCLA’s school of engineering.

Richard Alexander Fletcher (28 March 1944, in York, England – 28 February 2005, in Nunnington, England)[1] was a historian who specialized in the medieval period. Richard Fletcher was the eldest child and only son of Alexander Kendal Humphrey Fletcher, a banker from Leeds, by his marriage to Monica Elizabeth Hastings Medhurst/Fletcher. His childhood home was at Wighill, near Tadcaster.&nbsp;
He attended, as a scholar, Harrow School and Worcester College, Oxford, where he was taught by James Campbell and achieved a First Class Honours degree. In 1969 he was appointed as a lecturer at the University of York, where he remained for the rest of his career, becoming a professor of history in 1998. His first book, published in 1978 and based on his doctoral thesis, was entitled "The Episcopate in the Kingdom of León in the Twelfth Century," which pointed the way for an academic career much of which would focus on medieval Spain.
Fletcher was one of the outstanding talents in English and Spanish medieval scholarship. Richard Fletcher married Rachel Mary Agnes Toynbee, a grand daughter of another notable historian and a British Liberal prime minister, in 1976. The marriage produced three children.

Richard

Paul Graham is an entrepreneur, programmer, and essayist. He is the co-founder of Y Combinator, a startup accelerator that has funded over 2,000 companies including Dropbox, Airbnb, and Reddit. His career has been focused on technology and startups. He began his career as a programmer and software developer, working on various projects and startups. In 1995, he co-founded Viaweb, one of the first web-based companies that allowed users to create their own online stores. The company was later sold to Yahoo in 1998 for $49 million.

Lena

Mary Somerville was a Scottish scientist, writer, and polymath. She studied mathematics and astronomy, and in 1835 she and Caroline Herschel were elected as the first female Honorary Members of the Royal Astronomical Society. When John Stuart Mill organized a massive petition to Parliament to give women the right to vote, he made sure that the first signature on the petition would be Somerville's.
In 1834 she became the first person to be described in print as a 'scientist.' When she died in 1872, The Morning Post declared in her obituary that "Whatever difficulty we might experience in the middle of the nineteenth century in choosing a king of science, there could be no question whatever as to the queen of science."&nbsp;
Somerville College, a college of the University of Oxford, is named after her, reflecting the virtues of liberalism and academic success which the college wished to embody. She is featured on the front of the Royal Bank of Scotland polymer £10 note launched in 2017, along with a quotation from her work On the Connection of the Physical Sciences.
Somerville, the daughter of Vice-Admiral Sir William George Fairfax, was related to several prominent Scottish houses through her mother, Margaret Charters. She was born at the manse of Jedburgh, the home of her maternal aunt and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Somerville (1741–1830) (author of My Own Life and Times). Her childhood home was in Burntisland, Fife, where her mother was from.
Somerville was the second of four surviving children (three of her siblings had died in infancy). She was particularly close to her oldest brother Sam. The family lived in genteel poverty as her father's naval pay remained meager, despite his rise through the ranks. Her mother supplemented the household's income by growing vegetables, maintaining an orchard, and keeping cows for milk. Her mother taught her to read the Bible and Calvinist catechisms. When her household chores were done, Mary was free to roam among the birds and flowers in the garden.
In her autobiography, Somerville recollects that on her father's return from the sea, he said to his wife, "This kind of life will never do; Mary must at least know how to write and keep accounts". Ten-year-old Mary was then sent to an expensive boarding school in Musselburgh, where she learned the first principles of writing, rudimentary French, and English grammar. Upon returning home, she:
...was no longer amused in the gardens but wandered about the country. When the tide was out, I spent hours on the sands, looking at the starfish and sea-urchins or watching the children digging for sand eels, cockles, and the spouting razor-fish. I made collections of shells, such as were cast ashore, some so small that they appeared like white specks in patches of black sand.&nbsp;
There was a small pier on the sands for shipping limestone brought from the coal mines inland. I was astonished to see the surface of these blocks of stone covered with beautiful impressions of what seemed to be leaves; how they got there I could not imagine, but I picked up the broken bits, and even large pieces, and brought them to my repository.
During bad weather, Somerville occupied herself with reading the books in her father's library, including Shakespeare, as well as with "domestic duties." Such duties "occupied a great part of my time; besides, I had to shew my sampler, working the alphabet from A to Z, as well as the ten numbers, on canvas".
Her aunt Janet came to live with the family and reportedly said to her mother, "I wonder you let Mary waste her time in reading; she never shows [sews] more than if she were a man." Somerville was then sent to the village school to learn plain needlework, where she found herself annoyed that her "turn for reading was so much disapproved of, and thought it unjust that women should have been given a desire for knowledge if it were wrong to acquire it." Several times each week, the village schoolmaster came to teach Mary at home. In her Personal Recollections, Somerville notes that the boys learned Latin at the village school, while "it was thought sufficient for the girls to be able to read the Bible; very few even learned writing."

Mary

Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist, eminent as a collector and geologist, who proposed and provided scientific evidence that all species of life have evolved over time from common ancestors through the process he called natural selection. The fact that evolution occurs became accepted by the scientific community and the general public in his lifetime, while his theory of natural selection came to be widely seen as the primary explanation of the process of evolution in the 1930s and now forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory. In modified form, Darwin’s scientific discovery remains the foundation of biology, as it provides a unifying logical explanation for the diversity of life.&nbsp;
Darwin developed his interest in natural history while studying medicine at Edinburgh University, then theology at Cambridge. His five-year voyage on the Beagle established him as a geologist whose observations and theories supported Charles Lyell’s uniformitarian ideas, and the publication of his journal of the voyage made him famous as a popular author. Puzzled by the geographical distribution of wildlife and fossils he collected on the voyage, Darwin investigated the transmutation of species and conceived his theory of natural selection in 1838. Although he discussed his ideas with several naturalists, he needed time for extensive research, and his geological work had priority. He was writing up his theory in 1858 when Alfred Russel Wallace sent him an essay that described the same idea, prompting the immediate joint publication of both of their theories.&nbsp;
His 1859 book On the Origin of Species established evolution by common descent as the dominant scientific explanation of diversification in nature. He examined human evolution and sexual selection in The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, followed by The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. His research on plants was published in a series of books, and in his final book, he examined earthworms and their effect on soil.&nbsp;
In recognition of Darwin’s pre-eminence, he was one of only five 19th-century UK non-royal personages to be honored by a state funeral and was buried in Westminster Abbey, close to John Herschel and Isaac Newton. He was the father of naturalist Francis Darwin, astronomer George Darwin, and of politician, economist, and eugenicist Leonard Darwin.

Charles

James E. Tobin (born 1956) is an American author of popular history and biography books, including Ernie Pyle's War: America's Eyewitness to World War II (Free Press, 1997), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in the biography/autobiography category. Since 2006 he has been a journalism professor at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
His other books include To Conquer the Air: The Wright Brothers and the Great Race for Flight (Free Press 2003); Great Projects (Free Press 2001); and The Man He Became: How FDR Defied Polio to Win the Presidency (Simon &amp; Schuster, 2013). In 2021, his retelling of the story of Roosevelt and polio for young-adult readers was published as Master of His Fate: Roosevelt's Rise from Polio to the Presidency (Henry Holt).
In the same year, he published Sing to the Colors: A Writer Explores Two Centuries at the University of Michigan (the University of Michigan Press, 2021), a collection of narratives about the history of his alma mater. With the syndicated cartoonist Dave Coverly, Tobin has also written two picture books for children; Sue MacDonald Had a Book (Henry Holt, 2009) and The Very Inappropriate Word (Henry Holt, 2013).
Tobin was born in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1956 and educated in the public schools of Birmingham, Michigan. At the University of Michigan, where he earned a B.A. with a major in history in 1978, he was co-editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Michigan Daily. He pursued graduate studies in history at Michigan, earning a Ph.D. in 1986.&nbsp;
His doctoral dissertation, overseen by the American historian Sidney Fine, was "Why We Fight: Versions of the American Purpose in World War II," a study of interpretations of the U.S. war effort developed by, among others, President Franklin Roosevelt, the advertising industry, the filmmaker Frank Capra and the war correspondent Ernie Pyle.
As a reporter at the Detroit News, Tobin wrote general-assignment stories for two years, then covered two specialized beats — higher education, then medicine. While working for the News, he spent four years researching and writing a biography of the war correspondent Ernie Pyle. He researched Pyle's personal papers at Indiana University and the Ernie Pyle State Historic Site and interviewed veterans who had known Pyle.
Tobin left the Detroit News in 1998 to begin work on a book about the Wright brothers and their rivals in the competition to develop the first heavier-than-air aircraft. It was published in 2003, the centennial of the Wrights' first flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, as To Conquer the Air: The Wright Brothers and the Great Race for Flight. (Free Press, 2003.) In the meantime, he published a companion volume to the PBS 2001 documentary series "Great Projects: The Building of America."[6] He also edited and provided commentary for another companion book to a PBS series, Reporting America at War: An Oral History (Hyperion, 2003).
His next major project was a narrative account of Franklin Roosevelt's struggle with the aftermath of poliomyelitis from 1921 to 1932, based chiefly on archival research at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, New York. It was published by Simon &amp; Schuster in 2013 as The Man He Became: How FDR Defied Polio to Win the Presidency. In 2021 he published a wholly new version for young-adult readers, Master of His Fate: Roosevelt's Rise from Polio to the Presidency (Henry Holt).
Tobin has often written about the history of the University of Michigan, chiefly for websites and magazines published by the University. A collection of these articles and two additional stories and commentary, Sing to the Colors: A Writer Explores Two Centuries at the University of Michigan (the University of Michigan Press, 2021), was published by the University of Michigan Press.
