Peter Guralnick is an American music critic, writer on music, and historian of US American popular music, who is also active as an author and screenwriter. He has been married for over 45 years to Alexandra. He has a son and daughter, Jacob and Nina.
Guralnick's first two books, Almost Grown (1964) and Mister Downchild (1967), were short story collections published by Larry Stark, whose small press in Cambridge, Larry Stark Press, was devoted to stories and poems. Mona Dickson, writing in MIT's The Tech (May 13, 1964), gave Almost Grown a favorable review.
After Guralnick graduated from Boston University in 1971 with a master's degree in creative writing, he began writing books chronicling the history of blues, country, rock, and roll, and soul.
His two-volume biography of Elvis Presley, Last Train to Memphis in 1994, followed by Careless Love in 1999, placed the story of Presley's career into a rise-and fall-arc. Encompassing more than 1,300 pages (including 1,150 pages of text), the work countered earlier biographies such as Albert Goldman's Elvis from 1981 with an in-depth, scholarly examination of Presley's life and music.&nbsp;
Guralnick had previously written on Presley in The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock &amp; Roll, starting with the first edition in 1976, said article having been reprinted for each subsequent edition. Larry Stark Press published Peter Guralnick's second book in 1967. A first edition is currently valued at $200.
In contrast to contemporaries such as Lester Bangs, Ian Penman, and Nick Tosches, whose music writings are marked by idiosyncratic, self-referential, and highly personal styles, Guralnick's writing is characterized by a colloquial approach that is clean and understated by comparison. In his best passages, he has the ability to empathize simultaneously and remain objective. Writing as a music fan, his enthusiasm powers his writing but doesn't overpower it.
Guralnick wrote the script for A&amp;E's documentary, Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock 'n' Roll, narrated by Billy Bob Thornton, and he also scripted Sam Cooke - Legend, narrated by Jeffrey Wright.&nbsp;

Peter

Mindy Kaling is an American actress, comedian, and writer best known for her work on the hit NBC sitcom “The Office” and the Fox comedy “The Mindy Project.” Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1979, Kaling was raised in a close-knit family of Indian immigrants. She attended Dartmouth College, where she studied playwriting and acting and graduated in 2001.
Kaling’s career began in the comedy world, writing for shows such as “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “The Simpsons.” She eventually joined the writing staff of “The Office” and became a co-executive producer during its final season. She also starred as the character Kelly Kapoor, a position and character she was praised for pioneering as a South Asian actress.
In 2012, Kaling created and starred in the Fox comedy series “The Mindy Project.” As the show’s star and executive producer, Kaling was praised for her work in creating a series that featured a strong female lead, a rarity in the television industry. Mindy

Edmund de Waal is an artist who writes. Much of his work is about the contingency of memory: bringing particular histories of loss and exile into renewed life. Both his artistic and written practice has broken new ground through their critical engagement with the history and potential of ceramics, as well as with architecture, music, dance, and poetry. De Waal continually investigates themes of diaspora, memorials, and materiality with his interventions and artworks made for diverse spaces and museums worldwide.
Significant sites include the Museo Ebraico and Ateneo Veneto for his two-part project, psalm, which coincided with the Venice Biennale in 2019. The latter held de Waal’s most ambitious work to date, the library of exile: a pavilion of 2,000 books – most in translation - written by exiled writers from Ovid’s time to the present day. Following its presentation in Venice, the pavilion traveled to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Germany, in 2020 and then to the British Museum London. In 2021 the books were donated to the University of Mosul library in Iraq, which was destroyed in 2015.
De Waal’s first architectural intervention in America was held in 2018 at the Schindler House in Los Angeles. Titled —one way or another—the exhibition included works responding directly to the materials and spaces of the house as well as a sound piece conceived with the composer Simon Fisher Turner. The following year saw the first exhibition of contemporary art, elective affinities, open at The Frick Collection in New York. The artist created a series of site-specific installations in response to the museum’s masterpieces, its spaces, and history.
Other major museum interventions include white island at MACE, Ibiza (2018) and during the night at the Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna (2016), an exhibition on anxiety curated from their permanent collections. Kneaded Knowledge: The Language of Ceramics, a group exhibition co-curated with Ai Weiwei exploring the history of clay, was shown both at the National Gallery in Prague and Kunsthaus, Graz (2016). In 2021, de Waal was invited to curate an exhibition of Henry Moore’s work at the artist’s former home in Hertfordshire. The first exhibition of its kind, visitors were invited to touch a collection of Moore’s sculptures.
De Waal is also an acclaimed writer, best known for his family memoir, The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance, published in 2010. Whilst the story traces the ascent and decline of the Ephrussi family – a once wealthy Jewish dynasty – it is also a biography of their collection about loss, diaspora, and the survival of objects. An international bestseller, the book has won many literary prizes, including the RSL Ondaatje Prize and the Costa Biography Award, and has been translated into over 30 languages.
In 2016, it was chosen as the Independent Bookshop Week’s Book of the Decade. In 2021, 100,000 free copies were distributed across Vienna as part of the city’s Eine STADT. Ein BUCH initiative. That same year, an exhibition based on the book occurred at The Jewish Museum in New York.
Other celebrated titles include The White Road: a pilgrimage of sorts (2015), de Waal’s journey across continents, and time to follow the history of porcelain – a cultural obsession spanning a thousand years. From 2013-2015, a series of projects and events were held to coincide with its publication, including white at the Royal Academy of Arts, London (2015) and On White at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (2013).
De Waal’s most recent book, Letters to Camondo (2021), is a haunting sequence of personal letters written to Count Moïse de Camondo (1860-1935), the owner of a Parisian palace on the rue de Monceau and neighbor to the author’s forebears, the Ephrussi. Filled with beautiful objects, it became a memorial to the Count’s son Nissim, who died in WWI. Bequeathed to France as the Musée Nissim de Camondo, the house has remained unaltered since 1936.
Following an invitation to explore the museum’s archives and collections, de Waal’s resulting book and accompanying exhibition uncovered new layers of the family story. Previous publications include The Pot Book (2011), 20th Century Ceramics (2003), and de Waal’s critical study on Bernard Leach for Tate (1997).
Writers and poets have been constant touchstones for de Waal’s installations too – from Paul Celan, Emily Dickinson, and Wallace Stevens to John Cage and Walter Benjamin, most profoundly so for his solo exhibitions; their bright traces (2022) at the Gana Art Center, Seoul; a sort of speech (2019) and Irrkunst (2016) at Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin; breath, Ivorypress, Madrid (2019); the poems of our climate, Gagosian, San Francisco (2018); and Atemwende, Gagosian, New York (2013).

Edmund

Winston Churchill was a British statesman and politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice, from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century, leading Britain through its darkest hour during World War II.
Churchill was born in 1874 and was educated at Harrow and Sandhurst. He began his career in the British Army and later transitioned into politics, serving as a Member of Parliament for over 60 years. He held several government positions throughout his career, including as the First Lord of the Admiralty, Minister of Munitions, and Secretary of State for War.
During World War II, Churchill served as Prime Minister and played a key role in leading Britain through the war. He made powerful speeches that rallied the nation and inspired the British people to keep fighting, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. His speeches are widely considered to be some of the greatest in history, with phrases such as "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never" and "We shall fight on the beaches" becoming famous.

He remained an active Member of Parliament until 1964 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his six-volume memoir of the war. He died in 1965 at the age of 90.

Neil Richard Gaiman was born on November 10, 1960, in Portchester, England. He originated from a family of Eastern European Jewish descent. His father, David Bernard Gaiman, worked at their family chain of stores, while his mother, Sheila Gaiman, was a pharmacist. In 1965 the family moved to East Grinstead, West Sussex, where Neil grew up with a profound love for reading, beginning as early as age 4.&nbsp;
Some of his favorite childhood books include J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Batman, and other comics. Gaiman received early education at various church schools, including Fonthill School in East Grinstead, Ardingly College, and Whitgift School in Croydon.
When Gaiman began to outgrow comic books in his teenage years, he realized the lack of comic books for an older mature audience. He, therefore, decided to fill the gap himself. Although he wanted to write comic books, Gaiman had little idea how to go about it. Following his graduation from high school in 1977, Gaiman became a journalist writing articles for a number of renowned publications such as the Sunday Times, the Observer, Knave, and Time Out.&nbsp;
In March 1985, Gaiman married McGrath after the birth of their son Michael in 1983. The couple had two more children, Holly and Madeleine. In 1984, Gaiman wrote his first book, a biography of the band Duran Duran. He continued writing articles and interviews in magazines under pseudonyms. However, in 1987, Gaiman waved goodbye to journalism, stating, “British newspapers can make up anything they want and publish it as fact.”&nbsp;
Also, in the late 1980s, Gaiman published Don’t Panic: The Official Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Companion. Gaiman started writing comic books, continuing the series of Marvelman after its original creator and Gaiman’s friend Alan Moore abandoned it. After his impressive work on Marvelman, Gaiman was offered to write the limited series of Black Orchard and also to re-write an old character, The Sandman. From December 1988 to March 1966, Gaiman produced work on The Sandman, which was later collected in 12 volumes.&nbsp;

Neil

Lloyd Bradley (born 21 January 1955) is a British music journalist and author. Born in London to recent immigrants from St Kitts, Bradley discovered Jamaican music during his teenage years while going out in the North London-based sound systems and created his own, named "Dark Star System," in the late 1970s.
He worked on several magazines in their early years, including Q and Empire for Emap Metro, and launched Big! for the same company. Together with Mat Snow, he developed Maxim for Dennis Publishing and worked on the launch of Encore magazine in 1994 for Haymarket. He then joined GQ as an editor, moving in 2003 to US company Rodale as an editorial consultant on Men's Health and Runner's World magazines.
Bradley is currently a freelance journalist and consultant for many titles. He is also working on a biography of George Clinton that sets P-Funk in its correct socio-political context. His journalistic contributions have been published in NME, Black Music magazine, The Guardian, and Mojo, among other publications.
Bradley's Bass Culture (2001) is a book on reggae music. He was an associate producer of the BBC2 series Reggae: The Story of Jamaican Music. His 2013 book, Sounds Like London: 100 Years of Black Music in the Capital, received positive review coverage, described in The Independent as an "exceptional work [that] can sit proudly beside the author's earlier Bass Culture: When Reggae Was King, the definitive account of the glory days of the Jamaican music industry." Bradley is also a classically trained chef who divides his time between London and Florida.

Rupi

Thi Bui (born 1975) is a Vietnam-born American graphic novelist and illustrator. She is most known for her illustrated memoir The Best We Could Do. Thi Bui was born in what was then Saigon, Vietnam, three months before the Fall of Saigon during the Vietnam War. She is one of six children; two older siblings passed away before her birth. She and her family were part of the wave of "boat people" from Southeast Asia, arriving at a refugee camp in Malaysia. They were eventually granted asylum in the United States and migrated there in 1978.
Bui has worked as a school teacher for years, having worked in schools in New York City and Oakland. She was one of the founders of Oakland International High School in Oakland, California, the first public high school in California for recent immigrants and English learners. There, she worked as an art and digital media teacher. Since 2015, she has been a faculty member of the MFA in Comics program at the California College of the Arts. Before her career as an illustrator, she had never had any experience with drawing.
The range of Bui's work often focuses on political and social issues. In 2017, Bui published her first graphic novel, The Best We Could Do, chronicling the life of her refugee parents and siblings' life in Vietnam before their escape after the Vietnam War and their eventual migration to the United States. The book delves into themes of immigration, war, and intergenerational trauma. She worked on the novel for over a decade.
The book received critical acclaim and several accolades, including the National Book Critics Circle and American Book Award. It was also a finalist for the Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work category, among others. In 2017, it made Bill Gates' top five book list. In addition, from 2017 to 2018, it was selected as UCLA's Common Book and was incorporated into its undergraduate program.
The same year, A Different Pond was published as a children's picture book. She worked on the book as an illustrator and collaborated with spoken word artist and writer Bao Phi for the project. A Different Pond went on to win the Caldecott Honor for illustration.
In 2019, she teamed up with acclaimed novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen for a new picture book titled Chicken of the Sea. Nguyen and Bui collaborated with their sons to create the story, with Nguyen and his son Ellison as writers and Bui and her son Hien as illustrators.
Since her debut work, she has written and illustrated short-form comics about many domestic political issues within the Southeast Asian community. Her next book, Nowhereland, will focus on the incarceration and deportation of Southeast Asian people in the United States. She is also working on a science fiction story about climate change in Vietnam and poorer countries.

Emily Ratajkowski is an American model and actress known for her appearances in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and her role in the music video for Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines." John Robert Lewis was an American politician and civil rights activist who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia's 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020. He participated in the 1960 Nashville sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, was the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966 and was one of the "Big Six" leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington.&nbsp;
Fulfilling many key roles in the civil rights movement and its actions to end legalized racial segregation in the United States, in 1965, Lewis led the first of three Selma to Montgomery marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge where, in an incident which became known as Bloody Sunday, state troopers and police attacked Lewis and the other marchers. A member of the Democratic Party, Lewis was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986 and served 17 terms.&nbsp;
The district he represented included most of Atlanta. Due to his length of service, he became the dean of the Georgia congressional delegation. Lewis was one of the leaders of the Democratic Party in the House, serving from 1991 as a chief deputy whip and from 2003 as a senior chief deputy whip. He received many honorary degrees and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
John Robert Lewis was born near Troy, Alabama, on February 21, 1940, the third of ten children of Willie Mae (née Carter) and Eddie Lewis. His parents were sharecroppers in rural Pike County, Alabama, of which Troy was the county seat. As a boy, Lewis aspired to be a preacher, and at age five, he preached to his family's chickens on the farm. As a young child, Lewis had little interaction with white people, as his county was majority black by a large percentage, and his family worked as farmers. By the time he was six, Lewis had seen only two white people in his life.
Lewis recalls, "I grew up in rural Alabama, very poor, very few books in our home." He describes his early education at a little school within walking distance from his home. "A beautiful little building, it was a Rosenwald School. The community supported it; it was the only school we had. "I had a wonderful teacher in elementary school, and she told me, 'read my child, read!' And I tried to read everything. I loved books. I remember in 1956, when I was 16 years old, with some of my brothers and sisters and cousins, going down to the public library, trying to get a library card, and we were told the library was for whites only and not for coloreds."&nbsp;
As he grew older, he began taking trips to Troy with his family, where he continued to have experiences of racism and segregation. Lewis had relatives who lived in northern cities, and he learned from them that schools, buses, and businesses were integrated into the North. When Lewis was 11, an uncle took him to Buffalo, New York, where he became acutely aware of the contrast with Troy's segregation.
In 1955, Lewis first heard Martin Luther King Jr. on the radio,[ and he closely followed King's Montgomery bus boycott later that year. At age 15, Lewis preached his first public sermon. At 17, Lewis met Rosa Parks, notable for her role in the bus boycott, and met King for the first time at the age of 18. In later years, Lewis also credited evangelist Billy Graham, a friend of King's, as someone who "helped change me." Lewis also stated that Graham inspired him "to a significant degree" to fulfill his aspirations of becoming a minister.
After writing to King about being denied admission to Troy University in Alabama, Lewis was invited to meet with him. King, who referred to Lewis as "the boy from Troy," discussed suing the university for discrimination, but he warned Lewis that doing so could endanger his family in Troy. After discussing it with his parents, Lewis decided instead to proceed with his education at a small, historically black college in Tennessee.
Lewis graduated from the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee, and was ordained as a Baptist minister. He then earned a bachelor's degree in religion and philosophy from Fisk University, also a historically black college. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. As a student, Lewis became an activist in the civil rights movement. He organized sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in Nashville and took part in many other civil rights activities as part of the Nashville Student Movement.&nbsp;
The Nashville sit-in movement was responsible for the desegregation of lunch counters in the city's downtown. Lewis was arrested and jailed many times during the nonviolent activities to desegregate the city's downtown businesses. He was also instrumental in organizing bus boycotts and other nonviolent protests to support voting rights and racial equality.
During this time, Lewis said it was important to engage in "good trouble, necessary trouble" in order to achieve change, and he held to this credo throughout his life. While a student, Lewis was invited to attend nonviolence workshops held at Clark Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. James Lawson and Rev. Kelly Miller Smith. Lewis and other students became dedicated to the discipline and philosophy of nonviolence, which he practiced for the rest of his life.

John

Antonio García Martínez is an entrepreneur, investor, writer, and tech industry veteran. He has had a long and varied career, beginning in the early days of the dot-com boom and continuing today. Calvin Tomkins (born 17 December 1925) is an author and art critic for The New Yorker magazine. Tomkins was born in Orange, New Jersey. After graduating from Berkshire School, he attended Princeton University and received an undergraduate degree in 1948. He then became a journalist and worked for Radio Free Europe from 1953 to 1957 and for Newsweek from 1957 to 1961.
His first published contribution to The New Yorker was a fictional piece that appeared in 1958. In 1960 he joined the magazine as a staff writer. From 1980 to 1986, he was the magazine's official art critic, and his art reviews appeared in the magazine almost every week. From 1980 to 1988, he wrote the New Yorker's "Art World" column. As a New Yorker writer, he interviewed and wrote numerous profiles of major 20th-century figures from the art world and other fields, including Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Merce Cunningham, Buckminster Fuller, Philip Johnson, Julia Child, Georgia O'Keeffe, Leo Castelli, Frank Stella, Carmel Snow, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Frank Gehry, Damien Hirst, Julie Mehretu, Richard Serra, Matthew Barney, David Hammons, and Jasper Johns.
Tomkins has been married four times. His first wife was Grace Lloyd Tomkins, with whom he had three children. His second and third marriages were to Judy Tomkins and Susan Cheever (with whom he had one child). His fourth and current wife is fellow writer Dodie Kazanjian, who is both a Vogue magazine contributing editor and director of Gallery Met at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Lamont Jody Hawkins (born November 10, 1970), better known as U-God, is an American rapper and member of the hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan. He has been with the group since its inception and is known for his deep voice and rhythmic flow that can alternate between gruff and smooth.
Hawkins was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York City. He moved to Staten Island as a youth. He was originally a beatboxer for Cappadonna and was friends with future members Method Man, Inspectah Deck, and a childhood friend of Raekwon. Around the time of Wu-Tang Forever, his two-year-old son Dontae (now a hip-hop artist as Intell) was struck by a stray bullet while on his way to a birthday party, suffering permanent damage to his kidneys and hands, an ordeal U-God documented on the Wu-Tang Clan track "A Better Tomorrow."
