Frederick Douglass (né Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey) was born a slave in the state of Maryland in 1818. After his escape from slavery, Douglass became a renowned abolitionist, editor, and feminist. His first of three autobiographies, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave, was published in 1845. In 1847 he moved to Rochester, New York, and started working with fellow abolitionist Martin R. Delany to publish a weekly anti-slavery newspaper, North Star. Douglass was the only man to speak in favor of Elizabeth Cady Stanton's controversial plank of woman suffrage at the first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848. As a signer of the Declaration of Sentiments, Douglass also promoted woman suffrage in his North Star. Douglass and Stanton remained lifelong friends.
In 1870 Douglass launched The New National Era out of Washington, D.C. He was nominated for vice-president by the Equal Rights Party to run with Victoria Woodhull as a presidential candidate in 1872. He became U.S. marshal of the District of Columbia in 1877 and was later appointed minister resident and consul-general to Haiti. His District of Columbia home is a national historic site. D. 1895.

Frederick

Edward Gibbon was an English historian and Member of Parliament. His most important work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, was published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788. He became the archetypal back-bencher, benignly "mute" and "indifferent," his support of the Whig ministry invariably automatic. Gibbon's indolence in that position, perhaps fully intentional, subtracted little from the progress of his writing.&nbsp;
After several rewrites, with Gibbon "often tempted to throw away the labors of seven years," the first volume of what would become his life's major achievement, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, was published on 17 February 1776. Through 1777, the reading public eagerly consumed three editions for which Gibbon was rewarded handsomely: two-thirds of the profits amounting to approximately £1,000. Biographer Leslie Stephen wrote that thereafter, "His fame was as rapid as it has been lasting."&nbsp;
And as regards this first volume, "Some warm praise from David Hume overpaid the labor of ten years."Volumes II and III appeared on 1 March 1781, eventually rising "to a level with the previous volume in general esteem." I will not dissemble the first emotions of joy on the recovery of my freedom, and perhaps the establishment of my fame.&nbsp;

Lansing was a native of Chicago, Illinois, the son of Edward (1896–1949), a Chicagoan who worked as an electrician, and his wife Ruth Henderson (1896–1975), a native of New Jersey.&nbsp;

Terkel was acclaimed for his efforts to preserve American oral history.&nbsp;

Robert Coram’s career as a writer began in Edison, GA, a town of about 1200 located deep in the southwestern part of the state. Edison is a farming town. Most young people leave as soon as possible and take up a variety of careers. Coram is the only person from Edison ever to become a professional writer.
Coram was hired as a reporter for The Atlanta Journal when he was a sophomore in college. Like many who suddenly discovered their life’s work, he was enthusiastic and prolific. He was a general assignment reporter but also wrote features, book reviews, travel stories, and aviation stories. He covered the civil rights movement in Atlanta during the 1960s, and he wrote freelance magazine articles, first for the then-new Atlanta Magazine, then for aviation publications, then for national magazines.
He led a movement to unionize the reporting staff of the paper, and for that, he was fired. He said that was the most painful moment of his life, first because he had been fired from what he considered the best job in the world and second because the newspaper said the real reason he was fired was that he tricked a prominent politician into telling the truth about a controversial news issue. It is better to be fired from a job when young than when old, as it toughens one up.

John Hay (August 31, 1915, Ipswich, Massachusetts – February 26, 2011, Bremen, Maine) was an American author, naturalist, and conservation activist. Hay co-founded the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, Massachusetts, and served as its president from 1955 to 1980.&nbsp;

In addition to his success in the competitive chess world, Waitzkin also trained and competed in martial arts. After becoming the National Tai Chi Push Hands Champion and the National Tai Chi Chuan Champion, he went on to win the World Championship of Tai Chi Push Hands in 1997.
Waitzkin retired from competitive chess at the age of sixteen to pursue other interests. He attended Columbia University, where he majored in English and studied philosophy and psychology. After college, Waitzkin immersed himself in the world of poker. He became a professional poker player and won the 2006 World Series of Poker.&nbsp;
