Bruno Munari was an Italian artist and designer who contributed fundamentals in many fields of visual arts (painting, sculpture, film, industrial design, graphics) and non-visual arts (literature, poetry, didactic) with research on the game subject, infancy, and creativity.
Bruno Munari was one of the protagonists of 20th-century art, design, and graphics in Italy. Since his very first experiences in the 30s among the artists of the Second Futurism, he always dedicated his creative activity to every form of “experimentation” in the fields of painting, sculpture, design, photography, and didactics.&nbsp;
As a part of his eclectic work as an artist-designer, he always paid special attention to the world of children. Never separating content from form and materials, what he designed were at once books, book objects, and games that make us think.
Bruno Munari joined the 'Second' Italian Futurist movement in Italy led by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in the late 1920s. During this period, Munari contributed collages to Italian magazines, some of them highly propagandist, and created sculptural works which would unfold in the coming decades, including his useless machines and his abstract-geometrical works after World War II; Munari disassociated himself with Italian Futurism because of its proto-Fascist connotations.
In 1948, Munari, Gillo Dorfles, Gianni Monnet, and Atanasio Soldati founded Movimento Arte Concreta (MAC), the Italian movement for concrete art. During the 1940s and 1950s, Munari produced many objects for the Italian design industry, including light fixtures, ashtrays, televisions, espresso machines, and toys, among other objects. In his later life, Munari, worried by the incorrect perception of his artistic work, which is still confused with the other genres of his activity (didactics, design, graphics), selected art historian Miroslava Hajek as curator of a selection of his most important works in 1969. This collection, structured chronologically, shows his continuous creativity, thematic coherence, and the evolution of his aesthetic philosophy throughout his artistic life.
Munari was also a significant contributor to the field of children's books and toys later in his life, though he had been producing books for children since the 1930s. He used textured, tactile surfaces and cut-outs to create books that teach about touch, movement, and color through kinesthetic learning. Munari died in Milan on September 29, 1998.

Bruno

Jon Contino (born; January 26, 1983) is an Italian-American creative director, graphic designer, illustrator, lettering artist, and author best known for his identity work for brands such as Nike, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Hulu, Chicago White Sox, and 20th Century Fox. On October 23, 2018, Abrams Books published Brand By Hand, a graphic-design retrospective showcasing his work, career, and artistic inspiration.
Contino grew up in Nassau County, Long Island, NY, minutes away from Jones Beach and about 30 minutes from New York City. He spent the majority of his childhood drawing and practicing various forms of lettering and calligraphy. Contino credits his early interest in creativity to his family, who he states were also uniquely creative as well. As a teenager, Contino began playing drums in various New York Hardcore bands and discovered his love for art was useful in creating merchandise, promotional material, and album covers for local independent bands and record labels. It was at this point he decided to focus on graphic design as his primary career.
Contino started working as a freelance designer in 1997 and continued through high school and college. He graduated from Adelphi University in 2005. He opened his first independent design studio, Onetwentysix, in 2006. In 2009, along with business partner Matt Gorton, Contino started CXXVI Clothing Co., an independent menswear brand known for its use of nautical imagery and New York and Americana-based themes. Over the course of the next few years, CXXVI faced numerous unfortunate and destructive issues that caused it to shut down in 2014. Rather than abandoning what appeared to be a cursed career at that point, Contino decided to continue forward in the years to come, starting several new clothing brands and eventually a creative consulting agency aptly named CONTINO, which he is still the creative director of today.
As a designer and consultant, Contino is known for infusing a great humanistic personality into everything he does. His work is commonly described as earnest, gritty, and filled with a "New York spirit" while sparing nothing when it comes to attention to detail.

His work's tone and subject matter range from shocking depictions of sexuality and destructive erotic obsessions to subtle portrayals of the dynamics of family life within the context of the rapid changes in 20th-century Japanese society. Frequently, his stories are narrated in the context of a search for cultural identity in which constructions of the West and Japanese tradition are juxtaposed.&nbsp;
He was one of six authors on the final shortlist for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964, the year before his death. Tanizaki was born into a well-to-do merchant-class family in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, where his uncle owned a printing press that his grandfather had established. His parents were Kuragorō and Seki Tanizaki. His older brother, Kumakichi, died three days after his birth, making him the family's next eldest son. Tanizaki had three younger brothers: Tokuzō, Seiji (a writer), and Shūhei, and three younger sisters: Sono, Ise, and Sue.&nbsp;
Tanizaki described his admittedly pampered childhood in his Yōshō Jidai (Childhood Years, 1956). His childhood home was destroyed in the 1894 Meiji Tokyo earthquake, to which Tanizaki later attributed his lifelong fear of earthquakes. His family's finances declined dramatically as he grew older until he was forced to reside in another household as a tutor. Despite these financial problems, he attended the Tokyo First Middle School, where he became acquainted with Isamu Yoshii.&nbsp;
Tanizaki attended the Literature Department of Tokyo Imperial University in 1908 but was forced to drop out in 1911 because of his inability to pay for tuition. Tanizaki began his literary career in 1909. His first work, a one-act stage play, was published in a literary magazine he had helped find. Tanizaki's name first became widely known with the publication of the short story Shisei (The Tattooer, 1910). In the story, a tattoo artist inscribes a giant spider on the body of a beautiful young woman.&nbsp;
Afterward, the woman's beauty takes on a demonic, compelling power, in which eroticism is combined with sadomasochism. The femme-fatale is a theme repeated in many of Tanizaki's early works, including Kirin (1910), Shonen (The Children, 1911), Himitsu (The Secret, 1911), and Akuma (Devil, 1912). Tanizaki's other works published in the Taishō period include Shindo (1916) and Oni no men (1916), which are partly autobiographical.
Tanizaki married his first wife, Chiyo Ishikawa, in 1915, and his only child, Ayuko, was born in 1916. However, it was an unhappy marriage, and in time he encouraged a relationship between Chiyo and his friend and fellow writer Haruo Satō. The psychological stress of this situation is reflected in some of his early works, including the stage play Aisureba koso (Because I Love Her, 1921) and the novel Kami to hito no Aida (Between Men and the Gods, 1924). Even though some of Tanizaki's writings seem to have been inspired by these and other persons and events in his life, his works are far less autobiographical than those of most of his contemporaries in Japan.&nbsp;
Tanizaki later adopted Emiko, the daughter of his third wife, Matsuko Morita. In 1918, Tanizaki toured Chōsen, northern China, and Manchuria. He became infatuated with the West and modern things in his early years. In 1922, he relocated from Odawara, where he had lived since 1919, to Yokohama, which had a large expatriate population, living briefly in a Western-style house and leading a bohemian lifestyle. This outlook is reflected in some of his early writings.
Tanizaki had a brief career in silent cinema, working as a scriptwriter for the Taikatsu film studio. He supported the Pure Film Movement and was instrumental in bringing modernist themes to Japanese film. He wrote the scripts for the films Amateur Club (1922) and A Serpent's Lust (1923) (based on the story of the same title by Ueda Akinari, which was, in part, the inspiration for Mizoguchi Kenji's 1953 masterpiece Ugetsu Monogatari). Some have argued that Tanizaki's relation to the cinema is important to understanding his overall career.
Tanizaki's reputation began to take off in 1923 when he moved to Kyoto after the Great Kanto earthquake, which destroyed his house in Yokohama (at the time, Tanizaki was on a bus in Hakone and thus escaped injury). The loss of Tokyo's historic buildings and neighborhoods in the quake triggered a change in his enthusiasm, as he redirected his youthful love for the imagined West and modernity into a renewed interest in Japanese aesthetics and culture, particularly the culture of the Kansai region (around the cities of Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto).&nbsp;
His first novel after the earthquake, and his first truly successful novel, was Chijin no ai (Naomi, 1924-25), which is a tragicomic exploration of class, sexual obsession, and cultural identity. Tanizaki made another trip to China in 1926, where he met Guo Moruo, with whom he later maintained a correspondence. He relocated from Kyoto to Kobe in 1928. Inspired by the Osaka dialect, Tanizaki wrote Manji (Quicksand, 1928–1929), exploring lesbianism, among other themes.&nbsp;

Jan Tschichold was a prominent twentieth century German typographer and book designer. He was a remarkable teacher and an author as well. He is best known for writing Die neue Typographie and Typographische Gestaltung which became standard textbooks for the next generation of typographers.
Born on April 2, 1902, Jan Tschichold grew up in Leipzig, Germany. His father was a provincial signwriter and trained in calligraphy. Tschichold’s rich artistic background and the calligraphic training he received from his father set him apart from his contemporary typographers. Since he didn’t receive any such formal fine art education, he felt more at home utilizing commercial paper stocks and used stock fonts instead of handmade papers and custom fonts which other typographers prioritized. Upon Hitler’s election in Germany, the Ministry of Culture required all designers to register themselves with the ministry. Also communist sympathizers were barred from attaining any teaching posts.

Robert Bringhurst, poet, translator, linguist, critic, typographer, and book designer (b at Los Angeles, US 16 Oct 1946). The son of a migrant couple, Robert Bringhurst, was raised in Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Alberta, and British Columbia communities. Bringhurst spent 10 years as an undergraduate, studying physics, architecture, and linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and philosophy and oriental languages at the University of Utah, before obtaining a BA in comparative literature from Indiana University.&nbsp;
He holds an MFA in creative writing from the UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA and taught there between 1977 and 1980. Though an independent scholar, he lectures frequently and has served as poet-in-residence and writer-in-residence at a number of Canadian, American, and European universities.
Much of Bringhurst's work is in the area of book design and typography and reflects his interest in the relationship between language and written script. He was a contributing editor to Fine Print: A Review for the Arts of the Book (1985-90) and provided a seamless revision of Warren Chappell's key text, A Short History of the Printed Word.&nbsp;
Bringhurst's own 1992 The Elements of Typographic Style is considered a classic in its field. Likewise, The Surface of Meaning: Books and Book Design in Canada (2008) is a substantial contribution to knowledge. In 2009 Bringhurst was awarded the American Printing History Association award for his achievements.
