Archibald Cox (1912–2004), a distinguished lawyer, is best known for his role as special prosecutor in the Watergate investigation. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Cox graduated from Harvard Law School in 1937.
In 1961 President John F. Kennedy, for whom Cox had previously served as a speechwriter and adviser, appointed him as solicitor general. In this capacity, Cox won various cases defending the expressive rights of civil rights protesters. His success includes Bell v. Maryland (1964) and Griffin v. Maryland (1964), in which he persuaded the Supreme Court to uphold sit-ins on relatively narrow grounds.
In 1965 Cox returned to his former position on the faculty at Harvard Law School. He wrote a report for Columbia University dealing with student protests at that institution and helped guide Harvard University’s policies in response to student anti-war protests from 1969 to 1972. Cox was a special prosecutor in the Watergate scandal
In May 1973, Attorney General Elliot Richardson appointed Cox the first special prosecutor in the Watergate scandal. Cox’s investigation contributed to the chain of events leading to the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon. After testimony revealed that the Nixon administration had installed a recording device in the Oval Office, Cox subpoenaed tapes of conversations that took place there.
When Nixon refused to turn over the tapes, citing executive privilege, Cox took the matter to court. Finding that the president was not above the law, the courts ordered Nixon to give the tapes to Cox. The president instead offered to supply Cox with transcripts. When Cox rejected this approach, Nixon ordered him fired.
Rather than carry out Nixon’s order, Attorney General Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus resigned. Solicitor General Robert Bork then agreed to fire Cox. The resignations and firing became known as the “Saturday night massacre.” These events elicited protests and call for Nixon’s impeachment. Nixon eventually conceded, relinquishing the tapes to the new special prosecutor, Leon Jaworski.
Cox was chairman of the campaign finance reform organization. Cox served as the chairman of Common Cause; a nonprofit lobbying organization focused on campaign finance reform that helped secure the decision in Buckley v. Valeo (1976) upholding much of the Federal Election Reform Act of 1974. He received the Paul Douglas Ethics in Government Award in 1995 and a Thomas “Tip” O’Neill Citizenship Award.

Stewart Brand is an American writer best known as the editor of the Whole Earth Catalog. He founded several organizations, including The WELL, the Global Business Network, and the Long Now Foundation. He is the author of several books, most recently Whole Earth Discipline: An Ecopragmatist Manifesto.
Brand was born in Rockford, Illinois, and attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. He studied biology at Stanford University, graduating in 1960. As a soldier in the U.S. Army, he was a parachutist and taught infantry skills; he later expressed that his military experience had fostered his competence in organizing. A civilian again in 1962, he studied design at San Francisco Art Institute, photography at San Francisco State College, and participated in a legitimate scientific study of then-legal LSD in Menlo Park, California. In 1966, he married mathematician Lois Jennings, an Ottawa Native American.
Brand has lived in California since the 1960s. He and his second wife live on Mirene, a 64-foot (20 m)-long working tugboat. Built-in 1912, the boat is moored in a former shipyard in Sausalito, California. In addition, he works in Mary Heartline, a grounded fishing boat about 100 yards (90 meters) away. One of his favorite items is a table on which Otis Redding is said to have written "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." (Brand acquired it from an antique dealer in Sausalito.)
By the mid-1960s, Brand became associated with New York multimedia group USCO and Bay Area author Ken Kesey and his "Merry Pranksters." Brand co-produced the Trips Festival, an early effort involving rock music and light shows, in San Francisco with Kesey and Ramón Sender Barayón. Eric A. Stanley is an associate professor in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. They are also affiliated with the Program in Critical Theory and the Haas LGBTQ Citizenship Research Cluster.
Eric received a Ph.D. in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and previously taught in the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of California, Riverside. Their first manuscript, Atmospheres of Violence: Structuring Antagonism and the Trans/Queer Ungovernable (Duke 2021), argues racialized anti-trans/queer violence is foundational to, and not an aberration of, western modernity.&nbsp;
Eric is also working on two other projects, the first on nonsovereignty and the trans/queer people involved in Left insurgent underground activities in the 1970s and 1980s, and a new project on geographies of dislocation and trans resistance, focusing on the Bay Area.
Along with Tourmaline and Johanna Burton, Eric edited the anthology Trap Door: Trans Cultural Production and the Politics of Visibility (Cambridge: MIT Press, 2017), which won the Publishing Triangle Award for Trans and Gender-Variant Literature and the John Leo &amp; Dana Heller Award for Best Single Work, Anthology, Multi-Authored, or Edited Book in LGBTQ Studies from the Popular Culture Association.&nbsp;
With Nat Smith, they edited Captive Genders: Trans Embodiment and the Prison Industrial Complex (AK Press 2011/15), which won the Sylvia Rivera Award in Transgender Studies from CLAGS: Center for LGBTQ Studies.
