Emily McDowell is a writer, illustrator, and the founder of Em & Friends (emandfriends.com), formerly known as Emily McDowell & Friends, a greeting card and gift brand that specializes in chronicling the human condition. Launched in 2012, its products are sold online and at thousands of retailers worldwide. Emily was originally the sole writer and illustrator of its products; in 2018, the brand began partnering with additional writers and artists under its umbrella.

In 2015, the brand’s Empathy Cards, designed to help people connect around serious illness and loss based in Emily’s experience as a cancer survivor, struck a nerve globally, and Slate.com named Emily one of 10 Designers Who Are Changing the World. Her work has been featured in hundreds of media outlets, including The New York Times, BBC News, The Wall Street Journal, NBC Nightly News, and Good Morning America.

Emily's first book, "There Is No Good Card For This: What To Say and Do When Life Gets Scary, Awful, and Unfair To People You Love," coauthored with empathy expert Dr. Kelsey Crowe, was released in January 2017.
