Joel Greenblatt (born December 13, 1957) is an American academic, hedge fund manager, investor, and writer. He is a value investor, an alumnus of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and an adjunct professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business. He runs Gotham Funds with his partner, Robert Goldstein.&nbsp;
He is the former chairman of the board of Alliant Techsystems (1994–1995). and founder of the New York Securities Auction Corporation. He is also a director at Pzena Investment Management, a firm specializing in value investing and asset management for high-net-worth clients.
Greenblatt was born in Great Neck, New York. Greenblatt is a graduate of The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his B.S. summa cum laude in 1979 and M.B.A. in 1980. At Wharton, his paper "How the small investor can beat the market" was published in The Journal of Portfolio Management. Greenblatt spent one-year studying law at Stanford Law School in California before dropping out to pursue a career in finance.
Greenblatt is also famous for his contributions to education in New York City. In 2002, he donated $2.5 million to P.S. 65Q, a public elementary school in the borough of Queens, whose students come largely from the neighborhood's South American and South Asian immigrant communities. William N. Goetzmann is the Edwin J. Beinecke Professor of Finance and Management Studies at the Yale School of Management, and a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Peter Lynch is an American investor, mutual fund manager, and philanthropist. As the manager of the Magellan Fund at Fidelity Investments between 1977 and 1990, Lynch averaged a 29.2% annual return, consistently more than double the S&amp;P 500 stock market index and making it the best-performing mutual fund in the world. During his 13-year tenure, assets under management increased from US$18 million to $14 billion.
A proponent of value investing, Lynch wrote and co-authored a number of books and papers on investing strategies, including One Up on Wall Street, published by Simon &amp; Schuster in 1989, which sold over one million copies. He coined a number of well-known mantras of modern individual investing, such as "invest in what you know" and "ten baggers." Lynch has been described as a "legend" by the financial media for his performance record.
Peter Lynch was born in Newton, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1944. In 1951, when Lynch was seven, his father was diagnosed with cancer. He died three years later, and Lynch's mother had to work to support the family. Lynch reports that from his early teens, he worked as a caddie to help support the family. During Lynch's time as a sophomore at Boston College, he used his savings to buy 100 shares of Flying Tiger Airlines at $8 per share.&nbsp;
The stock would later rise to $80 per share, profits from which helped pay for his education. In 1965, Lynch graduated from Boston College (BC), where he studied history, psychology, and philosophy. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. In 1966, Lynch was hired as an intern with Fidelity Investments partly because he had been caddying for Fidelity's president, D. George Sullivan, (among others) at Brae Burn Country Club in Newton, Massachusetts.
He initially covered the paper, chemical, and publishing industries, and when he returned after a two-year Army stint, he was hired permanently in 1969. This time Lynch was charged with following the textiles, metals, mining, and chemicals industries, eventually becoming Fidelity's director of research from 1974 to 1977. In 1977, Lynch was named head of the then-obscure Magellan Fund which had $18 million in assets.&nbsp;
By the time Lynch resigned as a fund manager in 1990, the fund had grown to more than $14 billion in assets with more than 1,000 individual stock positions. Taking over when Magellan was a small fund, Lynch had no restrictions on what assets he could buy (other than laws, such as an SEC-enforced federal law that prohibits investment company funds that are registered as "diversified" from holding more than 5% of total portfolio assets in a single company at the time of purchase ).
He focused on individual companies rather than any overarching strategy, starting with large US companies and gradually emphasizing smaller and international stocks. From 1977 until 1990, the Magellan fund averaged a 29.2% annual return and, as of 2003, had the best 20-year return of any mutual fund ever. Lynch found successes in a broad range of stocks from different industries; according to Beating the Street, his most profitable picks were Fannie Mae, Ford, Philip Morris, MCI, Volvo, General Electric, General Public Utilities, Student Loan Marketing, Kemper, and Lowe's.

Peter

David LeFevre Dodd (August 23, 1895 – September 18, 1988) was an American educator, financial analyst, author, economist, and investor. In his student years, Dodd was a protégé and colleague of Benjamin Graham at Columbia Business School. The Wall Street Crash of 1929 (Black Tuesday) almost wiped out Graham, who had started teaching the year before at his alma mater, Columbia.&nbsp;
The crash inspired Graham to search for a more conservative, safer way to invest. Graham agreed to teach with the stipulation that someone take notes. Dodd, then a young instructor at Columbia, volunteered. Those transcriptions served as the basis for a 1934 book Security Analysis, which galvanized the concept of value investing. It is the longest-running investment text ever published. In 1916, Dodd graduated from High Street School, a high school in Martinsburg, West Virginia, where his father was the principal.&nbsp;
In 1920, he completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of Pennsylvania. One year later, he received his Master of Science at Columbia University. From 1922 to 1925, Dodd was an instructor of economics at Columbia University. From 1925 to 1930, he became an instructor of finance. From 1926 to 1945, he was in charge of business and economics courses.&nbsp;
In 1930, he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. From 1930 to 1938, Dodd was an assistant professor there, from 1938 to 1947, an associate professor, and from 1947 to 1961, a full professor. From 1948 to 1952, he was associate dean at the Columbia Business School. In 1961, he retired as professor emeritus in finance at Columbia University.&nbsp;
On May 17, 1984, on the 50th anniversary of publishing Security Analysis, Michael I. Sovern, president of Columbia University, awarded Dodd a Doctor of Letters, an honorary degree, for applying financial theories with brilliant results in a highly competitive world of investments. Columbia President Michael Sovern bestowed the honor during Columbia's 230th commencement exercises.
Dodd was a member of the following organizations: American Economic Association, Social Science Research Council (investment committee 1950–1956), American Finance Association (vice president 1946–1947), New York Society of Security Analysts, Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Gamma Delta, Alpha Kappa Psi, and Phi Chi Theta. At the time of his death, various editions of the book he co-authored, Security Analysis, had sold over 250,000 copies.
