Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1971. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied economics and physics. After graduating in 1995, he moved to California to pursue a Ph.D. in energy physics at Stanford University. However, he decided to drop out of the program after just two days in order to pursue a career in business.
Musk began his career in business with Zip2, a web software company he co-founded with his brother Kimbal in 1995. The company developed and marketed an Internet “city guide” for the newspaper publishing industry. In 1999, Compaq acquired Zip2 for $307 million, and Musk received $22 million from the sale.
In 1999, Musk co-founded X.com, an online financial services, and e-mail payment company. In 2000, X.com merged with Confinity, and Musk became the largest shareholder in the combined company, which was renamed PayPal. In 2002, eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion, and Musk received $165 million from the sale.
In 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, a company that designs, manufactures, and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. SpaceX’s ultimate goal is to make space exploration more affordable and accessible and to enable humans to colonize Mars ultimately.
In 2003, Musk co-founded Tesla Motors, a company that designs, manufactures, and sells electric vehicles and energy storage products. Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy through the production of increasingly affordable electric cars.
In 2006, Musk founded SolarCity, a company that designs, finances, installs, and monitors solar energy systems for residential and commercial customers. SolarCity’s mission is to make clean, renewable energy available to everyone.
In 2016, Musk founded The Boring Company, a company that designs and constructs tunnel-boring machines and associated infrastructure. The company’s mission is to reduce traffic in cities by creating a network of tunnels that can accommodate cars, bikes, and pedestrians.
Musk has also been involved in numerous other projects and initiatives, including Hyperloop, OpenAI, Neuralink, and Starlink. He is an outspoken advocate for renewable energy and sustainability and regularly speaks at conferences and other events on the topics.
