He received his undergraduate degree in Physical Education from the University of Alberta, Canada, and his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Guelph, Canada. He started his career as a postdoctoral fellow at Laval University in Quebec, Canada, and then as an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa. In 2005, he joined the faculty of McMaster University, where he has been a professor in the Department of Kinesiology since.

Dr. Gibala's main area of research is high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and its effects on health and fitness. He has published over 200 papers on the topic in peer-reviewed journals and is considered a leading expert in the field. He has also written a book on HIIT, "The One-Minute Workout," which is popular among fitness enthusiasts.

In the book, Dr. Gibala presents the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and argues that it is a more efficient and effective way to improve fitness than traditional, longer endurance workouts. He explains the molecular mechanisms behind the benefits of HIIT and provides examples of how it can be incorporated into a busy lifestyle. The book also includes sample workouts and tips for making HIIT a sustainable part of one's exercise routine.

The book is directed towards the general public, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to learn more about the science behind HIIT and how to make it a part of their life. The book has received positive reviews and has been praised for its accessibility and clear explanation of the science behind HIIT.

He has also been recognized for his research by receiving multiple awards, such as the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology Research Award, the Canadian Society for Applied Physiology Research Award, and the American College of Sports Medicine's Citation Award.

Dr. Gibala also advocates using HIIT in public health and fitness programs. He often speaks at conferences and in media outlets to discuss the benefits of HIIT and how it can be incorporated into people's daily lives.
