Led by Erasmus Darwin, the Lunar Society of Birmingham was formed from a group of amateur researchers, tradesmen, and crafters who met and made musketeers in the Midlands in the 1760s. Utmost came from humble families, all lived far from the centre of effects, but they were youthful, and their sanguinary was bottomless together they would change the world. Among them were the ambitious toy - maker Matthew Boulton and his mate James Watt, of brume- machine fame; the potter Josiah Wedgwood; the larger - than - life Erasmus Darwin, croaker, minstrel, innovator, and philosopher of elaboration (a forerunner of his grandson Charles Darwin). Latterly came Joseph Priestley, adventurer of oxygen and fighting revolutionary. Led by Erasmus Darwin they joined a small band of abettors, formed the Lunar Society of Birmingham (so called because it met at each full moon) and kick - started the Industrial Revolution.
