A Wrinkle in Time
256 pages, 2007
It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.
"Wild nights are my glory," the unearthly stranger told them. "I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I'll be on my way. Speaking of ways, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract."
A tesseract (in case the reader doesn't know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Miss L'Engle's unusual book. A Wrinkle in Time, winner of the Newbery Medal in 1963, is the story of the adventures in space and time of Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O'Keefe (athlete, student, and one of the most popular boys in high school). They are in search of Meg's father, a scientist who disappeared while engaged in secret work for the government on the tesseract problem.
Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time encourages readers to embrace their individuality. The book's protagonist, Meg, is not your typical heroine. She's awkward, insecure, and struggles with school. But it's these very traits that end up being her strengths. So, take a look at your own quirks and see them as unique strengths, not weaknesses.
In A Wrinkle in Time, L'Engle shows us the incredible power of love. Meg's love for her brother Charles Wallace is what ultimately saves him. This book reminds us that love can conquer even the most formidable challenges. So, remember to show love to the people in your life.
Throughout the book, the characters face terrifying situations. But they don't let fear stop them. They show courage and determination, even when things look bleak. This is a great reminder for us to face our own fears with courage.
A Wrinkle in Time encourages readers to value knowledge. The characters use their understanding of science and mathematics to navigate through different dimensions. This book inspires us to keep learning and exploring the world around us.
In the book, the planet Camazotz is a symbol of conformity. Everyone there is forced to be the same, which leads to a lack of creativity and individuality. L'Engle encourages readers to resist the pressure to conform and to celebrate their uniqueness instead.
