Robert Averitt joined the economics department at Smith in 1961. He served as chair of the department from 1967 to 1971 and again from 1979 to 1983.

Averitt regularly taught the undergraduate course The History of Economic Thought at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from 1980 to 1990, and was a visiting professor of political economy at the University of Texas at Dallas during the 1977–78 academic year.

He was director of American studies at Smith in 1996–97. From 1993 to 1997, he held the Sylvia Dlugasch Bauman Chair in American studies.
