Ben Carson, in full Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr., American politician, and neurosurgeon who performed the first successful separation of conjoined twins who were attached at the back of the head (occipital craniopagus twins). The operation took place in 1987 and lasted some 22 hours; it involved a 70-member surgical team. Carson also refined a technique known as hemispherectomy, which involves removing one-half of the brain to prevent seizures in persons with severe epilepsy. He later became active in politics and served as U.S. secretary of housing and urban development (HUD) from 2017 to 2019 under U.S. Pres. Donald Trump.
